The Sunset Tavern's at it again, ladies and gentlemen. Sundays have always been typical days where the rock and roll crowd in Seattle or anywhere else likes to stay at home to recooperate from the excess amount of alcohol and cigarettes they may have comsumed the night before. For those of us who wake up suprisingly refreshed, even after a night of debauchery on the town...SUNDAY BLOODY SUNSET, always starting at 4:00 pm on Sundays at The Sunset Tavern in Ballard, has the perfect solution for you: drink, laugh, and rock your hangover away.

In the past, Sunday afternoons at the Sunset Tavern have been known for good-to-ill-attended matinee rock shows, usually ending at 8 o'clock pm. Brian Foss's well-booked original series "4 o'clock Punk Rock" (2002-2004) had touring bands, cheap beer specials, and an unpredictable atmosphere of 'come-what-may'. Jenny Bendel took it to another level with '4 O'clock Rock' (2005-2008) with a more diverse palette of rock, punk and metal bands.

For the past two months, Kwab Copeland, booker at The High Dive, and a comedian/musician named Johnny Skolfuk (pronounced 'SKULL FUCK') have resurrected the afternoon time slot...except the difference is that there is more humor and insanity to be had by all. Per Kwab Copeland, "What we have to offer that separates us from the past 4 o'clock shows, is film and comedy in-between bands, better drink specials, and non-stop action until 8 o'clock."

Kwab, who is the main bartender at these shows, also points out that it's sometimes difficult for certain people to order drinks without busting up laughing. This could possibly be the fault of the host Johnny Skolfuk, who entertains with medleys of twisted versions of cover songs on piano, and his homemade selection of rare old commercials, rock films and other crazy video clips projected overhead. All the while, Johnny occasionally spits beer, mouths obscentities, cuts down even the most savvy hecklers while making them feel at home just the same, and introduces the bands. The shows have been attracting a growing base of curious folks, ages ranging from 21-65 and possibly onward. The drink specials are usually Bloody Marys in pint glasses for $3.00, Mimosas for $3.00, and tall cans of PBR for $2.00.

Also, just recently, Pabst Blue Ribbon has offered to sponsor 5 months of Sunday shows, which will most likely mean giveaways of PBR swag for promotional purposes. Notable shows in the past two months have been well-attended with bands like Visqueen and The Cops as mystery headliners. These shows are not always booked with 'mystery bands', but the mystery shows are designed to hopefully attract the interest of people who like to be surprised.

This Sunday 4/20 marks the first PBR-sponsored SUNDAY BLOODY SUNSET. The line-up is Fast Friends UK, Zach Stokes, and Year Of The Serpent...and of course, Johnny Skolfuk will be there playing his videos and scaring the hangover right out of you. From what we've heard. the future shows and mystery bands of of the not-to-be-missed kind are definitely in the works. Go to www.sunsettavern.com for more information and show listings.
