high on X
home from the X show at the showbox and reminiscing on what an intense night i've just had.
i'll start from the start: with the outfits! there were gloves without fingers, and i tried to steal someone's wallet but it was attached to a long chain.. how clever. only one mohawk, but many bald spots. lots and lots of tight, black jeans which i guess are cool right now or some crap.
anyway, the music is much more interesting than the bunch of teen chicks with red hair and zebra stripe shirts.
first up were Mark Pickerel and His Praying Hands. i thought they had some good haircuts going for them. the music was full of Adam & the Ants drum hooks, Lee Hazlewood-like vocals, and obvious Gun Club influences. i wasn't too excited for the vocals and lyrics. i was, however, stoked when Rachel Flotard (of local band Visqueen) joined in for a couple of songs with Mark Pickerel. http://www.myspace.com/markpickerelandhisprayinghands, http://www.myspace.com/visqueen
secondly were this australian pop punk band, the Skybombers. how fucking gnar, right? the boys of the band all looked the same; black pants, band tee shirts, and bobble heads. highlight of that band, the lead singer looks like Ric of the Young Ones. the drummer needed to speed up. but, i could definitely see them getting on MTV someday. http://www.myspace.com/skybombers
and X.... they were phenomenal. i don't care what my daddy says, X kick serious ass for being a bunch of old farts. i've only dreamed of my X record collection coming to life like holograms and this show for surely filled that void. i was so happy when they played "adult books" 'cause i've had a boner for that song since i was a 13-year-old punk kid. speaking of girl boners i've had since i started puberty, JOHN DOE IS SO FINE! whenever there was a pocket of quiet, i tried my darndest to yell things like "take off your pants!" and "john doe is sexy!" and oh my damn exene cervenka looked as cool as ever. i was hoping i'd get one of her bangles after the show, but i'll just buy one and say it's hers. billy zoom was a fucking creep; he didn't once stop selling himself through winks and creep smirks. D.J. Bonebrake had some sweet pink drums and a nice "jack and the box" tshirt on which cracked me up hardcore. http://www.myspace.com/13x69
overall, greatly eventful show. from bald men reliving their first mosh pit experiences, to run ins with high school philosophy teachers.. definitely a night i will not forget. until i drink this Pabst.
what do you think of X? ever seen them live?
