Tower Of Power @ San Mateo County Fair
When I read the posts on FUZZ, I realize that I am, "Old School" and that my taste in music is out of step with the new wave of musicians sprouting up everywhere. Yeah, play it loud and play it proud. More power to each of you and keep the Fuzz alive, please. But wait a minute. Here is something that you missed. An event so musically important that it boggles the mind to think that it went unnoticed in the pages of Fuzz. Sad but true.
Tower Of Power, Oakland's most infamous and beloved soul band blew the doors out of the San Mateo County Fairgrounds Exhibition hall over the last two nights. This was a special event, held on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week and it was free. Yes, that's right, it cost nothing. It coincided with the celebration of the 40 year anniversary of TOP and so, all of their original members, plus special guests, which consisted of 14 pieces, with the best B3 players on the planet swapping in and out, entertaining two packed shows as only an infamous band, one of the original contributors to what is now the music scene of funk, soul and brass that kicks ass can do. Sadly, it went without mention in these pages, which are suppose to be for musicians. San Francisco wake up and smell the bay. The East Bay grease is home cookin' at it's best! Come on!
When you hear a band of players that consists of the likes of Larry Braggs, Emilio Castilio, Stephen "Doc" Kupka, Francis "Rocco" Prestia, David Garibaldi, Bruce Conti, Mick Gillette and Lenny Picket (Lenny flew in from New York where he is Saturday Night Lives' saxophonist supreme) to name only a few, play some of the sweetest funkiest soul stew on the planet, bar none, it has to be recognized. Yet in the pages and BLOG's of Fuzz, not even a mention nor a whisper of one of the greatest local bands in the world. The most revered horn section on the planet, playing in your own backyard, for free and nada, nothing?
What the FUZZ is going on here?
If you were there, let's hear it from you. If you missed it, then I guess you missed it. If you don't know who Tower Of Power is, let's hear it from you as well.

I was there both nights, you are right about how great the shows were. We go to the fair every year to see them. Larry Braggs is awesome.
