The Fall of Troy @ Bottom of the Hill (May 22nd)

[Fuzz.com Exclusive Show Review]

Last Thursday May 22nd, the progressive lads from Mukilteo, Washington rocked the walls down at there sold out San Francisco show at Bottom of the Hill. Not taking anything away from Tera Melos, Foxy Shazam, and The Dear Hunter, who all played amazing sets, but The Fall of Troy blew me away- literally.

Here’s my view on the nights events:

The Fall of Troy/Fuzz.com Meet-n-Greet started a little later than planned, however the kids waiting to meet the band were more stoked than ever. Originally scheduled to kick off at 6pm, the Meet-n-Greet didn’t get going until 7:15pm. Assuming everyone in all parties would be feeling and acting rushed and displaced due to the windy weather and late starts, everyone was surprisingly calm and just anxious to get things going.

The Fall of Troy/ Fuzz.com Meet-n-Greet winners were finally allowed into the venue, and immediately escorted to the back patio where exclusive concert posters, Fuzz swag bags, oh, and The Fall of Troy were waiting.

Timidly approaching the band, were the first few Meet-n-Greet winners. Small step followed by smaller steps, it seemed at first, like this was going to be an awkward experience. However, that soon changed when The Fall of Troy guys stepped forward and started saying “Hello” and introducing themselves to the shy kids. Soon after, pictures were being taken (serious and goofy), horror stories from shows and the road were being shared, and everyone was having a good time.

Unfortunately, the Meet-n-Greet fun did have to end, but not before all 20 Fuzz.com Meet-n-Greet winners got a picture with the band, and their exclusive concert posters signed by the humble rockers. I gratefully said “Thank you” to the band as they started making their way up the stairs to their lounge room to rest before the show. They quickly stopped and spoke with me briefly about Fuzz.com and what the contest winners had to do to win, etc; for how big this band is (over 100,000 friends on MySpace), they were truly interested and eager to learn more about the contest and happy to be apart of the Meet-n-Greet.

As I said goodbye and thanks again to The Fall of Troy dudes, I couldn’t seem to shake the positive vibe I got from hanging around and talking to these fellows. They all wanted to know how to get involved with their fans and made sure that Fuzz were taking care of their fans as well; very cool guys.

As the Meet-n-Greet ended, the show and pretty much the night, just got started. Energy erupted as Tera Melos jumped on stage to get the music going. Encompassing the most experimental set I had ever seen up to this point, I was very impressed. They opened the night up with a very strong set, paving the way for more to come.

The crazy kids in Foxy Shazam, and the mellow but passionate rockers of The Dear Hunter rounded out the nights opening acts. All supporting bands had a similar progressive and experimental musical style, however, each band had an undeniable cohesiveness that made their nights set and sound utterly powerful. Could the unbelievable first impression of this “progressive/experimental” music continue with The Fall of Troy about to go on?

The trio took the stage, and the sold out crowd went nuts. Immediately going into their first song, the crowd’s roar turned into bobbing heads and moving bodies. As I stood close to the stage and speakers, excited to be near the action when that first note got played, I was quickly taken back when the first notes turned out to be about 12 notes in that first couple seconds of music; loud as hell too. Thinking I must have busted at least one of my ear-drums, I took a few steps back and enjoyed the rest of their set from a more comfortable distance.

Past the point of being blown away from the sound projected from the speakers earlier on, I was blown away by The Fall of Troy’s overall live performance. These guys were energetic, on point as far as sound and musical/lyrical accuracy goes, and created a sound that’s all over the place, yet has an undeniable catchiness to it that makes you want to hear more.

As far as the whole night is concerned, let’s just say I was impressed. Each band rocked the tiny stage in their own way, and getting to see The Fall of Troy on a more personal level, made me respect their group even more than I already did. Because even on a windy night in San Francisco, I was truly blown away.
