by the day, for each day

Time has a funny way of slipping by, no?

Last time we met I had two weeks to prepare for a 5+ week journey bringing me to places I have been and many I haven’t. Now it’s down to about 5 days. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not the type to stress too much over anything (almost to a fault…when’s that pesky tax deadline again?), however, when it comes to being away from my comfort zone with little to no ducats to speak of, even I worry a tiny bit.

I did manage to scrape a bit of change though.

Remember that “cool $12” from the recycling? Make that $5.80…in change. Quarters, nickels, dimes and even a roll of pennies. My advice, kids? You want that crisp, new five dollar bill? Don’t go to the recycle center at 4:45pm when it closes at 5pm.

“But, J…” you say, “…you’re also a little known DJ with a ridiculous record collection and zero to no fans!”

I know, I know! And I should get paid for that! But in these darkest of days, things are not what they seem…and that scratch I made the other night won’t last long. Heck, it may not last me past happy hour.

So I prepare starting with the things that don’t cost money. First task: filling my iPod with jacked tunes (suck it, Lars).

Next, look for more stuff to sell. While busy working on recycling and getting punked at Buffalo Exchange, I almost forgot about my recently excavated from storage CD collection (or what’s left of it after several moves). This should be a gold mine! Or so I hope.

Hey, that’s not my Gin Blossoms CD…

Meanwhile on another planet…

A while back, this past New Year’s to be exact, my band decided to take a trip together and celebrate the holiday up in the mountains. A lovely trip by all accounts, but that’s not important. What’s important here is the quiche I made in the mornings and I want to take the opportunity to share it with you. While I did take from a basic recipe, I substituted my own ingredients. Feel free to do the same.

INGREDIENTS
4 eggs
2 cups half-and-half cream
6 slices bacon, cooked and chopped
2 slices bacon, cooked and left whole
1 handful fresh arugula, chopped
2 apples, diced
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon white pepper
1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
4 ounces cheese (your choice), shredded
2 ounces mozzarella cheese, shredded
1 (9 inch) unbaked pie shell (optional, you may also use a greased baking dish)

DIRECTIONS
Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C).

In a large bowl, whisk together eggs and half-and-half. Season with salt, white pepper and nutmeg.
Place shredded cheese of your choice and mozzarella in the pie shell (or baking dish) along with the bacon, arugula and apples.
Pour egg mixture over cheese. Bake in preheated oven for 15 minutes.

Reduce heat to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C), and bake for 25 minutes, or until crust is golden and filling is set.

Allow to set 5 to 10 minutes before serving, garnish with the whole bacon slices, then enjoy as you think of me in some God-forsaken town in a red state somewhere starving and sparing for change.

Word.
