People of Earth: Funk up the bluegrass be-acth
People of Earth (POE), formed in 2004, is a funk bluegrass jamband from Pennsylvania. There music is a mélange of disco, jazz, funk, bluegrass, and rock. They have keen improvisational skills and can bust out four-part vocal harmonies when they need to get fancy. Like all jam bands, they base their live performances on improvisation and they are by no means novices. So if you jammers get the chance to see these guys live you won’t be disappointed.
There are many types of jambands out there but what sets them apart is that they are not a one label jamband like: bluegrass jambands, electronic jambands, blues jambands, and so on. The truth is I can’t really describe them; They are not quite a rock band, a bluegrass band, a funk band, or a disco band. Personally, I have never heard music like this. It sounds like you can put your finger on it but as you listen through the tracks you are sure to be dumbfounded. They usually start with a funk rhythms then out of nowhere bust into fast bluegrass riffs while singing a strong rock melody only to drop it into a light psychedelic groove.
This eclectic insanity can only be classified with one word: a GrassyFunkyRockFuryofBlueDisco. The strongest musical trait of People of Earth is their ability to create intriguing rhythmic and melodic textures. Their incorporation an array of styles in one tune allows them layer sounds and push the envelope on how we classify music. POE is deep.
