Interview with Socratic (Drive-Thru)
Socratic may be another pop/rock band emerging from the New Jersey music scene, but they are definitely not just another band. These guys have pure pop in their blood, melody in their veins, and provide a sense of adolescent fun within their surprisingly mature lyrics. Fuzz.com got a chance to ask Socratic a few questions about their new record and current tour. You can pick up their new album, “Spread The Rumors” in stores or online now, and be sure to stay in the loop to see if they’re coming to a city near you!
1. "Spread The Rumors" is out May 6th! How do you feel about it, and what can people expect in listening?
They can expect a quick record with no fat on it. There is nothing too long on it and we did that on purpose. We put out a summer record because we knew it would come out at that time. It was planned before going into the studio.
2. Describe the funniest day you had in the studio creating this album.
One day we had Paul Wall in the studio. It was pretty funny hanging out with him for a bit. A very nice dude. I just thought it was ridiculous that we were hanging with the grill man himself.
3. What was your biggest inspiration in creating this album?
We were listening a lot to pop music for this one. We put out Lunch for the Sky which was kind of all over the place; which I love. We choose to try something else on this one. See if we could gain more fans by hitting them quicker and a little more simple.
4. What is each band member's favorite song off of "Spread the Rumors"?
I think collectively we all love the song "Spread the Rumors." For me it is one of the best sounding songs on the record. It's also one of the more serious songs. Which I dig the vibe it gives off. It's almost lullaby in space.
5. Why is your current tour called "The Small Fries Tour"?
The tour was called the Small Fries Tour since all the bands on it were relatively smaller bands. It was a name that was chosen right before the tour. I don't think there was a crazy amount of thought that went into it.
6. What has been your favorite city you've played so far? Why?
Chicago on this last tour was wonderful. We always have nice people who come to see us there. It feels like one of the first cities that truly respect us and love our music for what it is.
7. What is each band members favorite song to play live? Why?
The other guys aren't with me right now but I would have to say Relevant Elephant. I really like singing it and it showcases our weirder side. How the song goes from one mood to the next. People usually start clapping halfway through the song because they think it is over with. Then the second half begins.
8. I don't see any upcoming tour dates in the San Francisco area. When will you make your way back this way, and what can your Bay Area fans expect from a Socratic live show?
To tell you the truth we don't have anything in that area booked as of now. But in the near future we will be coming back out that way. Hopefully in August.
9. Which are you looking forward to more and why?…The actual release of "Spread the Rumors", your In-store and signing in Fords, NJ., or your CD release party at Maxwell's?
We actually just played the signing which was a great time. All of our friends and families came out along with other fans. We had really hopeful feedback. Plus we had a party at Tom's house after which was quite the shindig.
10. To finish things off here, any general Socratic words of wisdom for the Fuzz.com community?
Eat your veggies. Read your books. Buy our record. We would most appreciate. And come to a show and hang with us
