PICTURE ATLANTIC

[FUZZ.COM EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW]

Fuzz.com was lucky enough to have the chance to get in touch with the local boys in Picture Atlantic, and discuss their new album ‘Kleos’, out June 20th. From their wild studio and stage antics, to their more mellow album concepts and titles, Picture Atlantic seems to be all over the place. However, after listening to ‘Kleos’ and understanding how focused and driven this band truly is, they are definitely on the straight and narrow road for great things to come!

What was your biggest inspiration in creating your newest album, ‘Kleos’? Why?

Nick: Mainly just experiences in the past year. That’s pretty generic, but I think I tend to write about the things that happen to me no matter how much I say I'm not going to.
Patrick: The band has gone through a lot of changes in the past two years. For me, the inspiration for 'Kleos' comes from all the things we've gone through as a band and how they have shaped us into the people we are today.

How do you feel about the final product?

Patrick: We feel extremely proud and thrilled that we are finally done with this album. It's been a long year that we have been going through the steps of writing, rewriting, recording, and perfecting the final product. For as long as we can remember, people have been asking us, "How's that album coming?" It's been hard to express to them how excited we are. The time is finally here when we can show everyone what all our hard work has gone into.
Nick: I'm happy with it. While we mixed it, I tried not to listen to it too much. When I heard the final masters, I was totally happy with what I heard. I tried not to hype myself up about, and maybe become pleasantly surprised, but I think in the end, I was honestly just completely happy with it.

Describe the funniest day you had in the studio creating this album.

Ryan: To be honest there were too many to count. I don't think we'd ever be labeled as a ridiculous band of pranksters, but we just sort of have as much fun as possible in between all the serious musical aspects. A lot of it ended up on video, though due to most of them being inside jokes and such, it would be pointless to try and explain them to people.

What's each band member's favorite song off the new album? Why?

Nick: Cassandra Castaway/ Clytaemnestra because out of all the songs it represents the album best lyrically and musically.
Ryan: The Softest Picture because it tells a great story and has somewhat of a sad but complete closure to it.
Patrick: Doves In The Clefts of Rock because of its epic buildup and powerful choruses. It's the perfect opener to our album in my opinion.
Aaron: Come Back To Me because it was meant to be a secret track, and we originally weren't going to put it on the album. Nick busted it out as a live performance and it turned out to be gold!
Rico: Slip Into The Sea
Brian Graves: Anytime / Coats of Armor...I wet myself when the bass comes in. As a whole though, I like Clytaemnestra.

Why is your new album entitled ‘Kleos’?

Nick: Kleos is actually a Greek word meaning "the things that others hear about you, or the fame you acquire through great deeds". I think I can safely say most bands are looking for that. But at the same time, it also was what all warriors sought after in battle. To be remembered forever. We all want to be remembered forever. People have quotes or phrases on their tomb stones. Highways are named after people or companies. Achilles sought to be remembered forever. Be remembered forever! Imagine that!

What has been your favorite gig played so far? Why so memorable?

Nick: Most definitely our show at Bottom of The Hill with Audrye Sessions. It’s mainly just nerdy tech band guy reasons. Sound was awesome, awesome venue. a real stage for once. A lot of people. It had an interesting vibe for me. I felt like we did well too. I also saw two people totally going at it in the booths in the back and not caring at all. You have to enjoy a show that features sleazy backstage PDA sessions.
Patrick: With our current lineup, I'd have to say my favorite show was probably at this little place called The Venue on March 4th '08. The
show wasn't particularly huge or amazing in any sort of obvious way, but the energy from the crowd was unmatched. I love to be all over the place when we play live and a great crowd gets me pumped! The audience definitely made that show for me.

What's each band member's favorite song to play live? Why?

Nick: For me, I think in all ways, I like to play every songs. I think I'm just lazy and can't decide. But they all offer different things to me when I play them live.
Patrick: Every single one of our songs is a joy for me to play. Just the fact of playing live is enough to ensure that I'm having a good time.
Ryan: Wrapped Up, because it has an interesting dynamic of people playing and not playing in certain points until the finale..Also, Brian Graves's favorite song to play live is Muses, because he starts off the set with a mini performance piece in which he is a new version of Peter Gabriel, from the future, whose space ship has just crash landed on an alien planet (which just so happens to be the Earth, circa 2021) He starts to record a diary in his captain's log, but is startled by strange noises, which are coming from the rest of the band.

I see you guys have your CD release show on June 20th in Morgan Hill. What can people expect when they come see a Picture Atlantic live show?

Nick: Lots of lights. And power outages.
Patrick: Stage-dives!
Ryan: Crashed space ship dioramas.

What are you more excited for; your CD release show at Dance Unlimited, or the actual release of Kleos?

Patrick: We are definitely more excited for the release of 'Kleos'. A show is a show, but the release of our album is something we have been patiently awaiting for quite some time.
Nick: Probably the actual release. The album being out means a myriad of things.
Ryan: Again, the release of the album; though Brian Graves in a Peter Gabriel flower suit is tempting.

To finish things off here, any general words of Picture Atlantic wisdom for the Fuzz.com community?

Nick: Stay in school and don't do Nu Metal.

Patrick: Keep your guitar tuned.
