Interview with Legendary Jack Casady from Hot Tuna
1. How have you seen the independent music scene change over your years of playing music within it? The independent music scene itself hasn’t really changed much. Bands still work hard to find members whom they are comfortable, and would create the best music with. Bands then find their sound, play live shows, and network to create their hopefully growing fan base. It was that way 50 years ago when Jorma and I were first starting out, and it’s that way now with all of the new up and coming bands. As for how the independent music industry has changed, we’re still testing the waters ourselves.
2. How did being involved with music and with Jorma for so many years, shape who you are today? Jorma and I have not only played music together for 50 years now, we’ve also been really good friends this whole time as well. We became friends and musical partners back in High School. Jorma was a bit older that I was, however, we found that we had very similar musical and personal influences that sparked our initial friendship. Over the years, we became more and more comfortable with one another, our friendship continued to grow stronger and stronger, and I think you can really hear the level of comfort in each recording and live show we play. And, we still discover new things about one another, musically and personally to this day, making each show and new musical collaboration we do together, new and exciting.
3. What can people expect when they come see Hot Tuna perform live? They will see the look of enjoyment on all of our faces as we’re on stage. They will see and feel a sense of comfort we have with one another, and hear the musical cohesion that being comfortable with one another for so many years produces. It’s a four-piece electric set that’s tight, fluid, and full of energy!
4. On your upcoming tour, what city are you most looking forward to playing and why? Since San Francisco is a home to me, and I’m talking to Fuzz.com based out of San Francisco, I’d have to say that playing The Great American Music Hall is what I’m most looking forward to. It’s a great venue in a great city, and I’m really looking forward to playing there again.
5. Any last words of wisdom by the infamous Jack Casady? Thank you very much for the support and I can’t wait to see you all in San Francisco!
