On August 8, while you were watching the opening ceremonies or drinking cheap beers with your friends, SF indie favorites Built for the Sea were playing songs from their in-the-works EP at Bay Area Sound Studios in the North Bay, and you missed out. Unless you were there, in which case you know how awesome it was and you are excused from reading the rest of this.
Kicking off Bay Area Sound Studios’ Concert Series, Built for the Sea played two short sets that sweet lead-singer/keyboardist, Lia Rose justified by saying they were “out-of-practice doing the live stuff” because they had spent so much time in the studio writing, preparing, and practicing the new songs that they were previewing. Well, it was worth it.

BFTS who began recording the next day at the very same studio under engineers Stephen Hart and Brad Dollar, played dreamy, melodic indie rock songs that are as deep as can be. The band is evolving in a new direction with a new approach to songwriting, and you can hear it in the complexity of their new tracks. Band mates, Jon Latimer, Daniel McKenzie, Eric Kuhn, and cellist Michael Fecskes demonstrated their ability to bring their own styles to the songs while fusing them into a cohesive sound. Such is the stuff of successful and stable bands. BFTS know what they’re doing.
Keep your ears alert for Built for the Sea’s next album, which will set sail at their release party September 18th at Slim’s. Don’t miss them again.
