All You Need is Love!
Love is a show that combines remixed/reproduced songs of the Beatles with the famous acrobats of the Cirque de Soleil. I was skeptical when I first heard of "Love". But then again, I thought Beatles = awesome and Cirque de Soliel = awesome, so shouldn't Beatles + Cirque de Soliel = awesome. My equation proved to be correct after I saw Love in April at the Mirage Hotel in Las Vegas. My questionable outlook stemmed from the fact that the remixed versions of great musical works often turn out to be sub par. Cirque de Soleil is always a reliable source of entertainment and the music matched up to its brilliance.
Staying true to the classic Beatles sound, the re-mastered music pushes the boundaries of the loveable Beatles tracks by adding melodic layers and voice overs. Oddly enough they also include behind the scenes studio mess ups that play an integral role in the live circus performance. The song choice was perfect; pulling tracks from the hits to the lesser known Beatles tunes. The remix gives you a variety that can cater both to new listeners and keep the diehard fans happy.
The majority of recordings were taken from the Abby Road Studio sessions. George Martin and his son Giles Martin took samples from 130 songs to create 27 tracks. All the songs are blended together by instrumentation so track order is key in the remix. The Martins also offer new musical arrangements on their version of "while my guitar gently weeps" where they incorporate an entire string section. The album itself is a work of art.
If the record is not enough try adding it to Cirque de Soleil. The show is a high energy acrobatic performance that works in unison with the music. Mixing comedy, trippy costumes, and jaw-dropping circus stunts the show is a perfect pairing to recreate the feel and magic of the Beatles. Even if you hate musicals this may be your one exception.
