Album Review: Air Traffic "Fractured Life"
Best Tracks: “Charlotte”, “Just Abuse Me”, and “Shooting Star”
Skip Over: “Empty Space”
I have to be honest in saying that I had never heard of Air Traffic before they became up and active on Fuzz.com. However, I was lucky enough to get my hands on their newest album, “Fractured Life”, and I am even happier to be able to review it for all of you. And though I’m not normally a fan of the new music popping up out of the UK right now, these gents sure did nail it with this one. “Fractured Life” encompass’ calm and collected beauty, in a fun, rock & roll, easy-listening sort of way!
The album opens up with the ever so catchy tune, “Come On”. With melodic nods to The Beatles, and a strong chorus reminiscent of Alanis Morisette, this is a great opening song. “Charlotte” is up next, picking up the fun where “Come On” left off. This song includes really cool breakdowns, and is poppy as hell; one of my favorites off of the album.
“Just Abuse Me” is next, and is an obvious single type track. The tightness of this song’s instrumental dynamics and progressions are amazing. And, the fact that I already know 90% of the lyrics and melody, is something special considering I can’t remember what I had for breakfast this morning.
The next song up, “Shooting Star” is by far my favorite off of this album. It’s catchy, fun, smooth, pretty, and powerful. When listening to this song, you can feel the emotion coming out in each word and note played. AT perfects this song into a mind-numbingly gorgeous intro, then makes you feel their more powerful sound during the last couple minutes of the song. “Shooting Star” shows off the boys’ talent in the best way!
Following the best track off of the album, is “No More Running Away”. It starts out a bit slow, but definitely picks up towards the end. This song packs in the emotion more than any other song on this album does. Always taken back by purity in voice and lyrics, this one knocked me to 1986; awesome.
“Empty Space”, though my least favorite track, has some very good qualities (can’t say that for all of my least favorite tracks off of an album). If you’re looking for tranquil, peaceful, and pretty; “Empty Space” is a good song for you, it was just a little slow and melancholy for me.
This next song I can totally see appearing on television. “Time Goes By” is a bit repetitive, but the epic-sounding chorus makes up for it. This would be a great song for road-trips or sun-bathing! And so would “I Like That”, the next sequencing song of off “Fractured Life”. This song has a killer opening piano part that would grab anyone’s attention.
“Never Even Told Me Her Name” and “Get In Line” are the next two tracks up. These two songs are finally bringing that UK rock sound that I enjoy very much. “NETMHN” brings the pure rock-n-roll, and “Get In Line” incorporates acoustic rhythm guitar in with their intricate electric guitar riffs. Both songs are fun and catchy.
Bringing up the rear, are “I Can’t Understand” and “Your Fractured Life”, both extremely pretty but slower songs. “I Can’t Understand” is your typical emo-British ditty, but a bit more peaceful. Their calm demeanor throughout, continues into the final song, “Your Fractured Life”.
After listening to this entire album a couple times through, I can’t help but sit in peace. “Fractured Life” is a good pop/rock album with great ambience and peaceful innocence appearing throughout.
