Air Traffic Slams it. (Concert Review: 05/08/08 @ Bimbo’s 365)
Air Traffic is an up and coming pop rock band from Bournemouth, England consisting of Chris Wall (vocals/piano), David Ryan Jordan (drums), Tom Pritchard (guitar), and Jim Maddock (bass). My preconception was that these guys were just another lackluster Indie band. I am happy to report that my initial assumptions were misplaced. After seeing the Air Traffic show at Bimbo’s 365 Club in San Francisco two things became apparent: these guys make great music and can lay it down live.
They fall into the category of Indie rock pop but it is clear that their talents surpass the average pop band. Air Traffic’s songs are catchy and creative. Their music is heavily melodic and centered around the hard hitting piano playing and vocals of Chris Wall. With beautifully layered arrangements, they create coherent passages that are both mellow and flat out rockin’. To sum up their sound, it’s like the Beatles had a child with Radiohead and the baby decided to play a strange mixture of Rolling Stones and Pink Floyd.
Air Traffic played many songs from their album fractured life including some hits “Charlotte” and “Shooting Star”. The most notable aspect of their performance was their ability to control the musical energy. They bring the intensity from zero to a million in all of there songs adding a nice contrast and constantly keeping the crowd energized and engaged. Air Traffic is not as big in America as they have been in Europe but that will not last. Catch these guys at a smaller venue before they blow up!
