I can't remember ever feeling less enthusiastic about a Live105 BFD (see Live105's homepage). It's like they're trying to be more like the Warped Tour. Unlike past years, there's no main stage, no seating, etc. At least the tickets are super cheap at $10.53 apiece, but I'm still not excited about it.

Actually, I'm more excited about the local stage than I am the main festival stage. I know all eight bands and like most of them. If I went, I'd probably spend more time partying with the local bands.

No, I didn't enter a Photoshop contest... that's how my wife wanted to make a certain announcement. (Hint: she is knocked up... subtle, huh?)

Along with that, I've resigned from my computer job to take some time off before the kid comes. I have some technologies I'd like to look into, some photography books to read, some exercise I want to do... various stuff... consider an MBA, brainstorm business ideas... go to a start-up in the end... start a start-up... be Mr. Mom... who knows.

The point is my life is a ticking time-bomb, set to go off in under 6 months... tick, tick, tick... and so I'm going to enjoy this time, this opportunity, and make the most of it.

That's the high end of it... we'll see where this goes...

August 14, 2007 - Billed as "Panda's last show" (partly true), I figured what better way to celebrate my birthday than at my favorite club and with some kick ass bands. Innocence Again started things out and played what seemed to be a short set. The awesome Overview was next... they brought their own lighting, so I switched to flash and even joined them on stage for some shots. It was my first time seeing Tragedy Andy, and let me tell you that they've got their shit together... they are tight. Finally Panda, in what I would have to say is probably the best show I've seen them do... and not just because they gave me a mid-show birthday shout-out (apparently encouraged to do so by Robbie -- thanks to both). Anyways, see the photos at

August 12, 2007 - When I asked one of the owners at Bottom of the Hill what shows to check out this month, this is the first show mentioned in response without hesitation. They've never steered me wrong and this show was no exception. Opening up was The Dead Hensons, a band that covers Sesame Street and Muppets songs, and does a fabulous job of audience participation. Good fun for sure. The headliner was Polkacide, a Polka band. Seriously. How cool is that? And yeah, they were a lot of fun. A definite highlight was Guido the door man dancing with the crowd in a big wiener dog costume. Photos at

August 11, 2007 - I love The Moanin Dove. With their probable last show in SF this year, I just had to go. As I didn't see any Fuzzies (that I recognized), I can easily say that you're all big dummies for missing their show, because (like always) it kicked ass. Before them were a good mellow indie band in Parasol. Before that, Tokyo Decadence. Photos at
I enjoyed both Boy In The Bubble and Oliver Future... good musicians and good music from both. Of course, it helped that three members from Oliver Future was the backing band for Josh Seidenfeld's band Boy In The Bubble. It's worth checking the both of them out. Photos at

July 1, 2007 - Ok, so it took me a little while, but here are the photos I took of the Vans Warped Tour's "San Francisco" stop (where it took place in Mountain View is only about 40 miles away). So, in the gallery, you'll find all 18 bands that played the two main stages, plus a bonus set of The Matches for all of you with names starting with "R" and ending with "obbie", plus a few extra photos from the day. There are definitely some good photos scattered throughout the day, so be sure to check it all out. The whole collection is at
And a sampling of the highlights (but really, go check out in greater detail):

August 3, 2007 - Finally being posted today, we have a show that started with the instrumental Crime in Choir, who I really liked... kind of a Mahavishnu Orchestra sound but a little more towards and early Pink Floyd psychadelia. Then Sholi, who were cool... their drummer was all over the place, at one point someone (probably a friend of his) yelled "hey Animal... chill out!" at him... pretyy funny. Finally, Marnie Stern did her guitar shredding thing to close the night. Photos at

August 2, 2007 - On a night where Maldroid and The Moanin' Dove were playing across the bay (which I was bummed to miss), I figured I needed to check out Judgement Day. The night started with Scrabbel, a band that is clearly Beatles influenced... unfortunately they recently lost their drummer which put them in a little disarray. Then Judgement Day, who basically kicked ass. Finally, The Botticellis, who I had seen once before... they're a very good indie rock band with a mellow sound. Photos at

July 30, 2007 - With everyones favorite "media whores"* Maldroid played Bottom of the Hill, I knew I had to be there. (*Thanks to the Naked Cowboy.) The night started with Jet Lag Gemini, followed by Patent Pending, who did a good job of workin' up the crowd. Zolof The Rock & Roll Destroyer was next and had a cool synth-rock sound that would go well with Weezer, Ozma, The Rentals, etc. Next was Maldroid with a strong set and a moshing crowd. Finally it was Suburban Legends putting on a great set and showin' off some fancy dance moves. This is a show worth checking out the photos for sure...

July 20, 2007 - Asian Man Records celebrated its 11th year anniversary at Bottom of the Hill with a strong lineup of bands. I was a bit wary at first, given that six bands were going to play... usually a marathon like that is very draining, and I was already pretty wiped out before walking in the door... and yet somehow as the night soldiered on, I found myself gaining energy instead. Musical styles ranged a fair bit, but there was one thing in common amongst all of the bands: they were all good. Another reoccurring theme was love for Asian Man Records' head honcho Mike Park.

The first two bands up and getting things going with a bang were Pteradon and their sister band Shinobu (both from San Jose). I enjoyed both musically and had fun shooting Shinobu's on-stage antics. At the end, the Pteradon guys joined the Shinobu guys on stage wearing robes for a finale of the two bands. Bonus points also to Shinobu for being the lone band to bring an asian man to the stage.

The next 3 bands took things down a notch in terms of stuff like tempo and noise, but certainly not quality. Andrew Jackson Jihad from Phoenix, AZ had a mellow and witty set. Mike Park noted that was his first time seeing them, adding "I think I'll keep them". The Hot Toddies from Oakland were the awesome awesomeness that I remembered seeing a year ago... if you don't know, you're missing out. Dan Potthast from Santa Cruz then delivered an entertaining and chuckle-inducing set.

Finally, the main course of the evening was The Lawrence Arms from Chicago... by this time, the first 5 bands had delivered so much foreplay that the crowd erupted in a giant orgasm in unison, moshing, singing, fist pumping and the works. The atmosphere was a terrific ending to a terrific showcase of bands, easily befitting the verbal love delivered for Asian Man Records. See the sets at

and I would recommend the Lawrence Arms, Hot Toddies and Shinobu sets if nothing else, but here's a few to whet your appetite:

A message about underage drinking...

Dear underage concert goer... two incidents happened the other night at a show I went to:

1) On her way in, an underage girl grabbed a bundle of the bracelets that meant "over 21", which was noticed by the sound guy. She attempted to hide in the girls' bathroom so that the bouncers wouldn't find her. Didn't work... they got her and she was removed.

2) An underage dude had his fake ID taken from him. He tried to ask one of the bands to help him get it back (like they could do anything) as well as the bouncers... no dice.

What you have to understand is that that the clubs/venues out there do not care to be your mommies and daddies and would love to let you get your drink on, since it means more money for them -- much more in fact, because as it's a novelty for you guys, you tend not to drink responsibly, etc. Unfortunately, if they *do* let you, then they could be shut down. In other words, the worst case for you is you lose your fake and/or get kicked out... the worst case for them is they go out of business or perhaps worse if you get hurt as a result and they are found to be negligent.

I know, I know... 21 is a bullshit limit when much of the rest of the world has a lower drinking age, etc. Tough nuts -- we all have to deal with it and at a certain point, you'll be "old enough". In the meantime, don't fuck it up for the rest of us and put our clubs and venues at risk. If you have to do it (and really, you don't), go do it somewhere else.

July 18, 2007 - I had been wanting to check out Company Car for a while... glad I finally did. Playing with them were Dominic Castillo from San Luis Obispo, Paper Tiger from SF and Disalto from North Hollywood. Sponsoring the event (and free drinks) was radar.net. Dominic Castillo started the show in mellow fashion. Paper Tiger had the big draw of the night (given that one of their members worked for the sponsor)... their highlight for me was a decently done cover of "El Scorcho" by Weezer. Disalto from North Hollywood was next, and I chatted with them about LA (since I grew up there). Finally, Company Car closed things with a good set. Photos at

July 17, 2007 - Three solid bands visited Bottom of the Hill in what became a highly energetic show. The Flatliners from Toronto started things off, Whole Wheat Bread from Jacksonville, FL was next, and San Jose's No Use For A Name headlined. By the time No Use For A Name got to the stage, the crowd was densely packed and moshing. It got so warm in there that I was sweating like a pig despite being on the speaker and out of the crowd... so I grabbed the fan next to me and started blowing it directly at the crowd and the band (generating a heap of "thank yous" to me).

And as a bonus, I got to see the three musketeers of Arin, Ian and Ryan for the first time in a while... photos at
