James Murphy & Pat Mahoney -- DJ set
Sex Vid -- various live sets on MP3
Love 666 -- American Revolution MP3s
The Means -- Community Horse LP
"Cathy Come Home" (d. Ken Loach)
Endless Boogie -- Focus Level MP3s (ai yi yi)
Mogwai -- Young Team 2xCD anniversary reissue (never really hung w/ this band, but I dig it -- probably woulda dug it more so back in 1997 though)

kind of a wild one last night. went down and saw friends for a birthday and also for dinner. then I headed into the city for a soft-launch of this new venue, Santos' Party House. Cool spot -- the upstairs (club) part isn't complete yet but the basement (dance venue) is. James and Pat did a bang-up job DJing and the sound in there is pretty amazing for a room with concrete walls and tile floors. Me and Kev (WYR?) got shitty on Allagash White and eventually I left. Upon walking outside, I discover Angela Means with Stephen O'Malley, Stefan Nemeth, and the rest of the folks who played w/ KTL at the Knitting Factory, arguing with the doorman about not being able to get in. I tell them to follow me and we walk 2 blocks over to Winnie's for a nightcap, where I end up serenading my woman w/ my rendition of "Invisible Touch" by Genesis over the phone. some "experimental noise" for the real hotshots of that scene. not pretty. my girl, she was crying hysterically which made it all the crazier. I jump in a cab and go home. WIN.

"Cathy Come Home" was on TCM late the other night, and was maybe the first time it's been shown in this country since maybe PBS in the '70s. It's a TV play with Carol White and Ray Brooks in which a woman (Cathy) runs off to London, marries a working-class guy, and in one catastrophic swoop after another, loses her job, her home, and her child due to the perils of the British welfare system at the time. It's terrifying. By the time they're camping out by the side of the road you want the pain to stop, but it never does.

found out tonight that I missed the spiv last night and we were in the same room together. really bummed. that guy is great.

wrote this elsewhere, usin' it here:

Things you will not likely hear at COCKFIGHT this Friday night:

"I'm coming back and bringing my infant, and will breastfeed him/her right here at the bar!"
"Oh no we can't control our patrons' voices of entitlement and now have to close at midnight"
"You got your bocce ball in my apple cinnamon Cheerio cheese bits"
"My auto-immune system has been forever disturbed by your drinking establishment"
"This place looks like a Pottery Barn"

You won't hear those things because Daddy's Bar is situated right by the BQE in working-class Italian Williamsburg, right on Graham Ave. You'll also hear any such posturing drowned out by six hours of continuous, throbbing ROCK MUSIC as DJed by Doug Mosurock and Mr. Vacation, a/k/a thee best dudes out there when it comes to hard groovin, chooglin, third-eye cleanin', full-tilt raging sounds of proto-metal, garage, psych, power pop, punk, non-bullshit indie, tropicalia, earth riddims, and plenty other genres we just made up because there's no use explaining this stuff when we can just go out there and DO IT. There's a lot of places to sit, a TV showing cartoons and basketball, a back patio where you can get your ya-ya's out until three AM dancin in the moonlight (it's put you in the spotlight) and DID WE MENTION THE FROZEN MARGARITA MACHINE. No? OK, summer is back and that means froze margs -- industry standards -- and the one-of-a-kind MARGAVEZA, which is pretty much an Icee for those over 21 ... coldest and most refreshing drink in town. Singe your cilia to rare, hard, righteous sounds and black out, then wake up in somebody else's bed. THERE IS NO BETTER WAY TO LIVE.

cockfight, right, all night

beam me positive vibes and good fortune today, for I am going on a job interview -- it's a position working in digital music, which with luck I can parlay into a career of music supervision. I really need this job, and I really need it to pay a decent enough salary for me and the missus to live decently.

barring this, I have another interview later in the week that'll keep us in good things, but alas, has nothing to do with music.
miracles need to happen.

BET came correct with just about every "very special" episode of "Diff'rent Strokes" last night, including the uber-creepy one I mentioned above, and the one where Nancy Reagan came on to tell Arnold and Willis to "just say no." I wish TV were programmed towards this sort of reflective, kitschy aesthetic more often.

Kids in the Hall did what I expected -- provided some laughs and some fond remembrances of the '90s.
