So there's this band all the way from Wichita, KS (MY hometown!) that is playing a Stork Club (Oakland) show on January 9th. They are Black Gasoline. Unfortunately, they are not yet on fuzz, but you can find them on the other "it shall not be named" popular site that has music and people.

I would classify them as straight up pure and simple stoner rock. Sort of like a bad ass southern hard rock. Anyway, if you are like them or if you just like them, then message me back.

Cheers,

Why i ask why? no I do not drink bud dry. barf. So I am the most sociable person out there, yet I find it hard to make long term friends as I get older. Anybody know the reason to this? It's completely in my control.....but what do you say? Hello. I find you interesting and likeable. Do you want to have a slumber party?

Anybody like Concrete Blonde? I sure in the hell hope you do. Anyway, CB broke up a while back, but Johnette Napolitano has solo projects and side projects (Catfish Scar). She just released a solo album called "Scarred" last Tuesday 05292007. Again, blown away. I've always found her voice and guitar playing quite amazing. Her lyrics and songwriting are just absolutely fantastic! At any rate, if you like her stuff, then go buy her album.

It's in heavy rotation with Justin Potts' new album, "eohippus" (you can find him on my Favorites page). I also bought a used copy of The Raconteurs "Broken Boy Soldiers"--I haven't listened to it yet, but I've heard a number of tracks and I'm pretty certain that I'll like it. Also picked up an album titled "Empty" by God Lives Underwater (it was $1.95, ok). Plus Rick Rubin produced it and I partied with these guys once in Lawrence, Kansas. I think I used to own it, but must have sold it at some point. It's prolly not great, but I'll give it a listen anyway. Then grabbed an album from The Rapture. i'm not too familiar with them, but have heard good things.

So....sew buttons....I have plenty to keep my ears happy.

Justin Potts' New Release "eohippus"--You like Beck? What about Ween?

I received this album in the mail yesterday and if this gives you any clue, I have already listened to it four times. That's about four times in 24 hours or an average of once every six hours for those math freaks out there.

This is Justin Potts' fourth CD.

Have you ever had one of those CDs that you really only like maybe one or two songs and you wish you would have just downloaded a couple of songs? Justin Potts release "eohippus" is completely the OPPOSITE of this. I am hard pressed to find one or two songs that I don't like as well as all of the other songs. In short, it's one of those few albums that I have listened to that I absolutely love every track and really can't get enough of the album.

I'm not in a band, I haven't ever played any instrument professionally and I don't typically write reviews; I can't get into any of the technical music speak that I hear so often, so I'll just tell how I feel about the work.

The first listen: Beck-esque and realllll gooooddd..... The second listen: Throw in some Ween and...damn I like this album...a lot! The third listen: Holy shite--this album is blowing my mind. Fourth listen: How can this be??

Yes, I think there are some beck and ween tones in this album (a great thing in my opinion), but Justin Potts is really breaking the ground all on his own. Not only does he perform all the songs, but he also recorded and mixed the album. J.P. sings, plays guitar, bass, drums, other percussion, keyboards, and of course the human beatbox. Guess who masterfully put the cover art together? Yep, J.P. himself.

What type of music is it exactly one might ask? pop, folk, psychedelia, blues, R&B, funk, indie rock, noise rock, experimental rock, lounge, electronic_uh? I can hear it all in there floating gleefully along like a happy poof-puffy cloudilicious peace loving soul. Complex. Tasteful.

I rate this album five out of five stars; two thumbs up--ten toes out. I give the full johonna d. endorsement on this one. Give it a listen, eh?

5. purchased installed hammock stand for: a. my hammock b. my hammock chair. NOTE: this just isn't the same as hanging from a tree or ceiling, but it does work. I have been without my hammocks for oh too long

4. Watched two interesting-ish movies: a scanner darkly (drugs drugs drugs--not me, the movie) and some movie with j. malcovich about a character that is impersonating stanley kubrick--I can't remember the name of the movie, but it was rather odd and good and lovely

3. swam in tomales bay (yes, the ocean). it was damn cold. i kept asking the folks that i was with--are you sure sharks don't come in here [no of course not, no way]....I do have a fear of sharks and bears. Later the next day I was telling this woman about swimming and she was having a freak out that no one should ever swim in tomales bay because of all the sharks. oh my god.

2. went to Thee Parkside for the very first time and watched Kemo Sabe play a show and had a blast--lovely dears.

1. and....drum roll please.....good events for this weekend: oaklandish oakland art murmur stroll. downtown oaklandish area friday 7 10pm; world music festival--berkeley saturday--people's park--blankets and beer.
That's really all I wanted to say. I lost my cat this weekend in a very unexpected accident. I will write about him soon I think. It's hard right now. He was my buddy for sure. He was named after Chris Rock's character in Dogma. He was black and fuzzy (yes fuzzy) and loved everybody and everything. He never had a grumpy bone in his little cat body and was always there to grind (head butt) his head into your arm, leg, thigh, whatever. It was his way of saying "helllloooooo...it's me--Rufus!! And I am in need of some lovins". He liked other cats and dogs too. Super easy going fellow....I miss the shit out of him.

I'm just not good with music reviews. Mainly because I don't have a technical ear nor do I have a lovely vocabulary. I guess what I would have to say about this band is that it is just there--in a good way! The vocals are smooth and strong and sultry in a manly way. Ever see Lady in the Water? It's like the lead character with balls. The riffs may seem familiar, but add it all up and you may be a bit surprised with the total package. Clean. Strong. Meticulous. Pretty magical.
