MIDEM - Is It Worth It?
I'm debating whether going out to Cannes in January for MIDEM is a worthwhile trip. I've reached out to several folks about their thoughts and it's been split fairly evenly. My favorite comment I received from someone who has been going for several years was:
"MIDEM is good if you do MIDEM Net…its more digital than MIDEM....the regular MIDEM event is a chummy affair of Polish and Icelandic sub-publishers meeting their partners from Latvia and India…or looking for new ones….and then getting horribly drunk and lost for days at a time...not very challenging or engaging if you have an agenda...I’ve been going since the late 70’s….and it’s a massive cost with very little return unless you have (a) an opportunity to buy publishing rights or (b) something to launch that will grab headlines or are (c) going there to close a deal. Cannes is awash with fraudsters and wanabees….kind of reminds me of Hollywood on steroids."
Pretty hilarious, but not so funny if you ended up blowing several grand on the trip, hotel, food/booze, and the conference itself with little to show from the event. I hear that it's a great networking event and a chance to meet international contacts, but it seems that the costs are not justified.
Just thought I'd throw this out and I'd appreciate it if anyone had some thoughts...
