blog Amazon Goes DRM-free - When?
I am not a believer in DRM, but that is not the subject of my post. I just needed to get that off of my chest...

Amazon announced in mid-May that it will provide DRM-free tracks on its site. As we can all imagine, a large portion of the tracks will be coming from EMI, which earlier announced its move to provide music without DRM restrictions. I'm not sure when Amazon plans to go live with its new storefront, but I suspect that they will likely integrate with Amie Street, into which it made an investment in early August. The store will apparently have millions of DRM-free songs from over 10,000 labels. Clearly, this is a move that Amazon is making to differentiate itself from iTunes (now the third largest music retailer of all formats in the US), which still sells music from the other 3 majors that require (and enforce) DRM restrictions.

I'm curious if anyone knows when Amazon plans to launch the service and at what price it will be selling naked mp3s.

I remember hearing that announcement a while ago too... I hope it's actually a truly DRM-free system, and that the trend catches on.
