It was "predictable" that, on the strength of the enthusiastic fan take-up of their latest marketing initiative and the overwhelmingly positive reaction to their expression of complete trust in their fans, Radiohead would join a growing number of globally recognized artists to take a completely different cut at distributing their next album and leave the major record companies behind.
The NY Times reported in an article today that Radiohead, who let their fans set their own price for "In Rainbows," is cutting its own deals for domestic UK and international distribution with a new breed of "Facilitator" [impresario Coran Capshaw and indie label XL Recordings]rather then a major label.
It seems to me that the next logical and, thus, perhaps "predictable" step for Radiohead and/or the rock band's new Facilitators would be to use the Fuzz Mixtape to enhance fan engagement and music distribution even more. The name of the game in the future will be: Trust Your Fans.
Well, Fuzz, go get 'em!

Odd that, even though fans could name their own price for the new Radiohead album, it has been downloaded off BitTorrent over 100,000 times already.

I think listeners do so much peer-to-peer file sharing they are creatures of habit and just continue even if they can get it for free "the right way" as well.

I think this is great that they were willing to put the trust in their fans - I talked to a few folks that ended up paying about 10 Euros for the album anyway. There was a bit of a backlash from some folks that thought it was a marketing ploy to increase sales of the boxed set down the road. Whatever the case, they certainly stirred up a boatload of press and got the fans excited.
