I noted the intriguing label and action in the "Recent Activity" tab which prompted me to do some research on Wintersun while looping the group's [single] upload to guide me through my surfing. In the process, I came across an instructive description of Wintersun's work-in-process, written by Jari who said in part in a news entry on April 17, 2007 [emphasis mine]:
"All the drums, bass and all guitars (rhythms/melodys/solos and acoustics) has been recorded (probably some add ons will be recorded when the synths and vocals are done). Then I´ve pretty much finished with the intro, that I´ve decided to include on the album. Really atmospheric and huge with some magical Japanese influences. I´ve also started to compose and arrange the synths. I´m trying to avoid the basic (and boring) layering chord stuff and create something really cool to boost the magic of the songs into new dimensions. I haven´t been able to start singing yet, because my preamp and mike "died", but hopefully soon I can. There´s been a demand to know what is going on, so there we have it. Unfortunately the news ain´t always good."
I think the news is good enough.
It must be something in the water in the northern climes that makes folks work hard for perfection. First out of Finland to conquer the world on a truly global scale came the giant-killer, Nokia. Will Wintersun follow, equally well-prepared and fully-armed? Maybe so. It's all in framing what you got and these folks seem to have it.
I dunno. I've been on a steep learning curve on punk [sorry I didn't get it before], now comes my continuing education in metal and more. What a climb! I'm still in the early stages of my appreciation. These guys from alternating dark places and endless light push our sensibilities to the extreme and we are compelled to listen. I hope there is more to come for us check out here.
NB: a note to readers of my reviews: the text of my reviews at this site may change from time to time. As I listen for futher nuances in a song or body of work, I keep modifying or adding to my thoughts, making my reviews an organic "moveable feast". Since Fuzz artists are constantly evolving, as are our own perspectives, I think Fuzz reviews should not be frozen in time. It's time to extend the power of real-time, web-based music discovery, by making our reviews, "wiki-reviews."
