The Opposite of Faith
Those interested in some “cutting edge” work combining audio and video effects to generate untapped sensory perceptions should check out what the artist collective, theoppositeoffaith, is doing in the “evolution in film sound design” . This is a description of some of the group’s latest work [led by J]:

The Karas AMV

Anime Music Videos (AMV) are created by hobbyists who take a popular song and add it on top of existing Japanese Animation footage to give the Video a new and more exciting feel. The Karas AMV was created around the idea of taking found sources and samples from existing Japanese Animation titles and combining it with performances highly skilled musicians and Turntablist to recreate the film sound effect work creating a frenetic, hyper real approach to sound design. After the original sound track was removed, the music (Bass performance and Ableton sounds by J of The Opposite of Faith) was written and recorded into Ableton Live- every other voice, movement, moment and mood was created on Turntables and through Turntable mixing techniques (cutting, scratching, transforming) while performing to the video. The approach was expanded by having the Turntablist (DJ Quest and DJ Cplus) manipulating the Dave Smith Evolver and the Korg Kaoss Pad through the DJ mixers and MIDI control. Performances (Bass, Turntables) were record through the EMU 1616 into Ableton Live and warped, edited and combined there. The final mixdown was performed in Ableton Live and Mastered using Summit Audio Tube EQs.

This is the first in series of creative Music/Video/Art Projects by the Opposite of Faith-creativity without compromise

Here is a sample of the group’s work:

In the same way that some have stated that an entire society (Japan) is in the process of trying to redefine themselves and find a new business model in the web-era that is described as “Gross National Cool” [I myself think they are not there yet, but at least that country appears to have set a unifying cultural direction to take to move beyond their, and the world’s, cultural confusion and funk], I think it should be part of the mandate of the fuzz community to support artist collective initiatives such as the one undertaken by The Opposite of Faith. In so doing, we will be able to articulate with greater precision what ultimately will be the business model to sustain the music ecosystem of the new digital world we cannot escape.

There are a lot of random "music videos" on YouTube done in a similar style, by editing in nearly random japanese animation videos to match the song. But none of those go this far, or are as well done. A certain weezer one comes to mind, actually. Incorporating a bit of live performance that relates was a cool addition to this artist's process too... i like it.
