Effective immediately, I have changed the basic theme of my blogs at Fuzz from "On 'Disaggregating' the Music Industry" to Nightschool for Entrepreneurs. While the premises behind the former notion are valid and we still need to dismantle what's broken before we can fix it, it's time to concentrate more on the fixin'.
So, why "Nightschool for Entrepreneurs?"
As I reflect on the entirety of my experience to date with Fuzz [from meeting each member of the Fuzz start-up team, every Artist and Fan of music who signs up and uploads music or blogs here and even the casual but repeat user who randomly visits out of curiosity to find out what's goin' on, from young people in search of a career to world-wise professionals seeking renewal, everyone] and try to identify the common denominator that drives us all, it is the entrepreneurial spirit. We are, even the most jaded and cynical of us, optimistic risk-takers of the possible.
The irreducible core of this common entrepreneurial, risk-taking quality radiates, diamond-hard, deep within us. What drives us is more in our guts than in our "rational minds" dealing with the hum-drum reality of our daily lives and making all the small but brutalizing choices to survive in an impersonal world.
What we really need is to move, step by deliberate step, to convert this burning urge within us to become a renewable, more focussed and reliable, energy source, lest it diminish and, ultimately, die. [Actually, I am not that fearful of the demise of that spirit (other than for dramatic counterpoint), because once infused, the entrepreneur within us is pretty hard to kill, even by the most persistent of the nay-sayers who will always surround us and try to suffocate that spirit because they fear and stand in awe of it.]
I have always admired the courage of those who go to "nightschool" after a long, hard day at a tiresome job because they have the guts to follow a dream. Some of us just go to nightschool in our minds as a relentless activity chasing a vision, whatever else we may be doing.
I have come up with the notion of "Nightschool for Entrepreneurs" because most of us have "daytime" jobs or lives that take up a large chunk of our time. Thus we need to keep going to nightschool [or even to play hooky on the computer compulsively] to develop what we cherish doing most - keeping that spark alive and trying to find the key ingredients in our personal skill-set to make our secret and fondest dreams a full-time reality.
This will just be the first of a series of discussions that I hope the Fuzz community takes up at the Nightschool for Entrepreneurs so that we can learn from one another and utilize the combined power of the entrepreneurial core that resides deeply within us.
Let's share our knowledge and vision at this special nightschool. It will be a wonder to behold. Trust me on this.

When you put it like this, I would imagine that I have really never left "Nightschool" since my first "class". I've noticed this after countless shows, rehearsals and recordings after a day of work over the years. It's funny, I've continued to learn from it and I am grateful that I kept attending. Yes, there are times when I feel like "dropping out". Then something inside me gives me an unexplained and strange feeling that I'm missing another "lesson", and so I just keep going back for more.

It's very rare that I just go home and do nothing after the day job, s**t, that's when my real day starts most of the times.
"What drives us is more in our guts than in our "rational minds".
- I like that statement! That's exactly how I've lived my life since I can remember, with everything, not just following my dream. That was the source of motivation that led me across the the country to CA in the 1st place. A lot of friends back home thought I was totallty nuts to come out here and not have the perfect job lined up or whatever. I do know that if one waits around too long to make a move on something until everything seems perfectly lined up, then you run the risk of not actually moving at all, and also could subconsciously build a "comfort zone" that includes a high probability of regret attached to it...
I think I'll be attending "Nightschool" for quite a while...
While I undertake to be the beginning administrator of our Nightschool, I really see this as a collective undertaking by Artists and Fans to bring a new, web-based dimension to the music ecosystem.
Good luck to us all.
