Ned Self'e own description of his work as southern rock meeting smooth jazz is right on the money.
Castaways is a good song to start my new playlist on "contemporary rock." At first I thought I'd add it to my jazz playlist because of the stong melodic theme of Selfe's fancy steel guitar work, with a hip tappin' backgrounder. But then a bigger "rock" sound develops with others kickin' in - great sax, more engagement of drums, piano, other stuff, and I thought I need to start another category for guys like this mixing rock and jazz.
Castaways definitely has a contemporary rock feel to it, and yet you'll start to see the layers of nuance on the basic theme developed by Selfe that bespeaks the jazz idiom. Jazz or rock, it all bodes well for other stuff we have to get Ned Selfe to upload here.
