Sometimes I think that the voices of certain singers are as familiar to me as the voices of my closest friends and family members. Those voices of those singers are my companions through bad times and great times.
I am good in making lists, put order into chaos, but I somehow fail to arrange my personal feelings properly, hiding them in a drawer, neglecting them. Some of those male voices I mention below are sort of keys to my feelings, keys to the heart. They will always guide me through times when I have fits of excessive rationality.

So here's the list:

5) Roy Orbison (I hadn't heard his voice for ages. But when I listened to an old song on the radio, the bright warmth in his voice remembered me that I really enjoyed listening to his songs when I was a teen.)
4) Tom Waits (His voice is not appealing, the stories in his songs often remind me of the ugly sides of life. Nevertheless there is hope in the songs, hope not although but because of all the dark sides!)
3) Johnny Cash (I love his deep voice, powerful and fragile, fierce and affectionate. The two times I had the chance to see him live on stage are among the most impressing moments of music I ever experienced.)
2) Mark Kozelek (I can't even describe what his voice means to me. It is full of mystery and beauty.)
1) Bruce Springsteen (It's not possible for me counting the nights when I listened to Nebraska or to Darkness On The Edge of Town and felt the desire to escape. Now I know I can't run away from myself. The healing power of his voice make my scars less visible.)

Beautiful - there are just a very few people that fall in love with voices the way you + I do...I will never understand you appreciation for Bruce Springsteen though ;-) ....

And I am sure there's going to be Hope on your Part 2 list too!

You're right SVT!!! Just like music is our memory keepsakes, the voices of certain singers as you put are our "companions through bad times and great times!" I do have to say that it was only when I met my husband that I became a fan of Bruce Springsteen. I remember his shock that I as an american and he as an Indian had such different views of his music. He forced me to listen to his favorite songs and like I opened my heart to him...I opened my mind to Bruce's music!

My list if I may:

1) Stevie Nicks: She could in my opinion has the best female rock voice out there...to me at least!! When one of her songs comes on, my ears perk up waiting for one of my favorite melodies sung with that raspy and intense voice of hers! They always say you are drawn to music of your childhood. Especially when you get older!

2) Mary J. Blige (her older music)...damn what a voice!!! It's sad that the music I liked best from her was when she was going through so much inner turmoil! Her First (What's the 411) and Second Album (My life) were cd's that I listened to on the regular!

3) Lena (not very well known neo-soul jazz) her vocals got me through my first year in Philadelphia...taking the train into the city before we moved directly in the city.

4)Phil Collins: Please no judgers here...but that song in the air tonight will always give me chills not to mention the killer drum sequence at the end! His voice; simple but forceful!

5) Sting formerly or are they still runited?: His voice brings me back to being just 5 years old and listening to "Every Breath She Takes" at my neighbors house in Florida. My ears too perk up when I hear anything from him. Funny thing, it actually soothes me...perhaps because my neighbor would always make fresh bisquits and jam for us whenever we were over!

That's my five for right now!!!

Christine LOVES Philly!!!

DS the BRuce Thing, wow, I would thing a shoe "horn" like yourself would relish in his POP 'NESS. I agree with Bruce, and Cash. There are a few more. When I first heard Cash's remake of 'Hurt' by TRENt REZ I thought it was one of the most hard hitting heart felt renditions of pain ever. Not a big video guy but the Video for that with all his pics and life story, WOW double WOW, I really almost cried the first time I heard and saw that song/vid by Cash. AS for Hope, how about Jostel Hasons voice :), why, because I am always hopefull you download (it's free) all my tunes and really listen to the whole cd. Really listen. Peace and good vibes SVT. Thought I would throw that last part in there just for you, :) "Shame on me for never realizing this Blog"

What a great list...could you fathom a duet between Orbison and Cash? Gives me chills. I love me some Johnny Cash, and "Live at San Quentin" is a classic. I really love Tim Buckley, Bowie (shocked Christine likes him too..this is getting ridiculous! LOL), Fred Neil, Bob Dylan, James Brown, Bobby Darrin and Howlin Wolf (especially "Goin' Down Slow"), Sinatra...Peter Murphy.... sorry I am rambling, and you are trying to take the chaos out....

-Bette
Love Tom Waits too...especially the song "Martha"..

Bingo,

Great collective list, but of course, Bruce has a different style, yet never mind when you love something the most important thing is your love and the way you attend it, just the way you did and the cliche of categorized orders, genres, etc., can be ignored with no harm.
However, I'm mainly writing to suggest you;
add a URL of MP3 selective tracks of the listed artists. It may be time taking but worth doing.

I think so many people forget about Neil Young. "Needle and the damage done", "Hey hey, my, my" shit the whole Harvest album, his stuff with csn " helpless". He can alter a mood like all the greats. He is one of the best and the real granddaddy of grunge. Hit the chords with slop, power, out of tune beautiful noise. I also relate to him because he does not posses the greatest voice, but his uniqueness is unequivocally never mistaken and his lyrics remain his true voice. Young, one of the best and still doing his thing. His heart is never in question , an old soul. He has seen it all... Every moment he has lived through is portrayed in every note, Jostel
