I sure can't think of any better way to spend your next couple hours than playing with this stuff... so without any filler I now present to you, our beloved artists and fans, some of the major new features we've just released!

-- Big deal stuff --
For those of you in bands who were confused/annoyed by needing to have a normal user profile in order to create a band profile, and then managing your band as that user... no longer! You can now have a single, solitary, band-specific login that goes straight to your band management dashboard, instead of having to jump through a user profile.

We still think that it's good to encourage artists to be more active in supporting other acts and using the site as a fan too every once in a while, but we no longer require it. If you'd like to convert your existing fan+band combo account over to this new band-only style, just shoot me a PM me or email support@fuzz.com. And tell all your friends in bands who haven't bothered getting on Fuzz yet, that they can now sign up with these more simple band accounts!

-- Private Messaging stuff --
* Sent Messages box -- we've got a LOT of feedback that people wanted this, so now you've got it. We can't magically show you old messages you've already sent, but you'll get a copy of all future messages you send to other users in your new Sent box.
* New filters -- you can now limit the types of messages displayed to actual private messages from users, music recommendations, or fuzz notifications. this'll make it a lot easier to look thru what's most important at the moment.

-- Invitation stuff --
Some people have let us know that the little popup "Plaxo" widget for inviting more friends onto Fuzz wasn't working right. And yeah, they were right. So we wrote our own, and it's rad. Give it a try-- go invite more friends now and bask in the glory of a quicker and actually working friend invitation system.

-- Adding band members --
We used to require you to know your bandmate's email address to link them up with your band profile-- turns out, not everyone knows that! So now, all you need to know is their own Fuzz username to link 'em up (and don't worry, you can still invite bandmates who aren't on fuzz yet by emailing them, too. You've now just got two options there instead of one.)

Of course, there have also been gobs of bug fixes and other little coolnesses added, so be sure to go check everything out and see how you like the site now. And as always, send your feedback to The Goat. Word.

This is completely live, totally acapella little random soloey thing... she's just using a sampler to store and repeat certain parts and overlay them. Her performance at Coachella last year was one of my favorites... she's fucking incredible, and is the most modest female performer I've ever seen with this much raw talent.

Not to mention she's smokin' hot-- I'm going to make it my life goal to marry her.

Defendant prevails in another RIAA file-sharing case

A federal judge has dismissed Elektra v. Santangelo with prejudice, leaving the door open for defendant Patti Santangelo to recover attorneys' fees from the RIAA. Last month, Judge Colleen McMahon denied the RIAA's motion to dismiss the case without prejudice, ruling that the case should either be dismissed with prejudice or proceed to trial so that Santangelo could have a shot at being exonerated of the RIAA's accusations of file-sharing and copyright infringement.

Patti Santangelo was targeted by the RIAA in 2005 as part of its crackdown against suspected file-sharing. The divorced mother of five denied engaging in file sharing herself or having any knowledge of its happening in her house. The RIAA subsequently sued two of her children, Michelle and Robert, who were 15 and 11 years old when the alleged infringement took place.

A stipulation of discontinuance with prejudice was entered yesterday by both the plaintiffs and defendants, which means that Santangelo is the prevailing party and therefore eligible to file a motion to recover attorneys' fees. It is anticipated that the RIAA will strongly oppose any such award of fees, as they have in Capitol v. Foster.

The dismissal strikes another blow against the music industry's doctrine of secondary infringement. It's an argument that the record labels have consistently made in their lawsuits: if a defendant has "a reason to know" of any infringing activity, he or she should therefore be liable for any and all infringement—even if the defendant was not aware of it. So far, the courts have not found the argument convincing, which could lead to still more dismissals. Ruling in Capitol v. Foster, Judge Lee R. West called the record labels' secondary infringement claims "untested and marginal."

This is a scenario the RIAA has been anxious to avoid. Although the record industry has been eager to file lawsuits, it never wants to see the defendants exonerated, even when it's a clear case of mistaken identity. Instead, it would rather just quietly drop unwinnable cases and walk away, leaving defendants to deal with the legal bills from defending against a case that should never have been brought. For at least the second time, a judge has prevented the RIAA from doing exactly that. If the trend continues, the music industry's legal strategy could end up being far more expensive than it anticipated.

Yeah, those infamous wannabe music website helpers over at MySpace think it's awesome that they're upping the number of songs they let a band host there to a whopping FIVE. Five? Excuse me? Putting all your albums for sale at once on fuzz instead... that seems like the better choice for artists to me.

The Playa

What's the playa, you ask? No, I'm not talking about the beach. We're talkin about that cool little thing up in the corner, who's job it is to play all the music on our site. See it? Good.

Hopefully, our lovely little player mcdoodle works without a hitch for you already. Makes the noises you tell it to make and not too many others, doesn't explode.. you know, the usual suspects. So if you already like it, cool! -- rock on.

However, we know that a smallish number of fans may still have the unfortunate experiences of a browser crash or two. Safari users, I'm looking at you. Sorry bout the hassle (believe me, it's my main browser too), but that's why we're still calling it a beta!

We are building a music community together. So just as music is at the heart of our daily actions, it must also be the focus of every aspect of our home here on the web. In other words, expect the audio player to kick a lot more ass than it currently does, in a couple more weeks.

Cool? I hope so.. but the goat loves you either way. And he bets you'll love the new and improved player when it's finally ready. Just hang tight.. and get used to all the other cool stuff you can do here first. -- Ry

Ok, I think it's time for people to really start testing playlist functionality, and providing your feedback on the most glaring faults and coolest features so far.

There's obviously a lot more work to do, but all the basic functionality is there now. I think. Let the goat know what you think of it so far!

Incubus!

So I was lazy and didn't buy an Incubus ticket before they sold out. But my friend's friend just got food poisoning and can't make it to the show, so I get her ticket!! So I get to see Incubus tonight @ the Warfield, I'm stoked. It will be awesome. The end.
