Ryko 2007 SXSW artist showcase Thursday, March 15 at FRIENDS
Brian Eno’s groundbreaking 77 Million Paintings on view at the Austin Museum of Art, March 9–18
Nearing a quarter century of releasing and developing talent in a multitude of genres (some yet to be classified!), Ryko is excited to announce its 2007 SXSW artist showcase. Set for March 15, 8:00 PM at Friends, Ryko will present performances by master Americana story-teller Jeff Finlin, Welsh stadium power-poppers The Storys, country music star Kelly Willis (who will perform songs from her long-awaited upcoming release), Danish psychobilly trio PowerSolo, and the Finnish break-out band The Crash. Closing the night will be the wildly popular UK post-punk outfit, The Young Knives.
In addition to the artist showcase, there will be a special installation of Brian Eno’s groundbreaking visual art software 77 Million Paintings at the Austin Museum of Art (AMOA) from March 9–18, in honor of Waterloo Records and Video’s 25th Anniversary.
The 77 Million Paintings software creates a constantly evolving, slowly-changing “light painting” on a TV or computer screen, which in turn produces a virtually infinite number of variations, and is accompanied by the signature music of Brian Eno. Here, at AMOA, guests will be able to have their own unique experience of Eno’s continued exploration into generative light, or what he describes as “visual music.”
Eno’s 77 Million Paintings project perfectly encapsulates Ryko’s original vision. The Ryko name is actually a somewhat ham-fisted transliteration from the Japanese lexicon, where the two characters “rai,” meaning “thunder and lightning,” and “kou” meaning, “light,” together describe a “sound from a flash of light.” A pioneer in ushering in the compact disc era (Ryko was the first ever CD-only label), Ryko continues to explore new mediums by blurring the boundaries between artistic vision and technology.
** Be sure to join us on Saturday, March 17 at AMOA for a special cocktail reception at 5:00 PM. The latest addition to the Ryko family, Leslie Mendelson will give us a scintillating taste of her stylized and alluring vocal and piano prowess.
