I kinda wanted to be a vegan before, but I can't even keep a diet without bread or sugar...so that never worked out.

I know a couple of people who are vegan and vegetarian and their reasons are pretty much a) because it's cruel to animals and b) meat is nasty.

Well I just wanted to know from any of you who don't eat meat why you don't eat it and what it means to you? Or if you were to stop eating meat, what your reasons would be?

My sister in-law is a veg and she says it is because she got sick of the taste of meat! I always look at her with shock when she tells me that! haha Hindu's in general are veggies although she is a punjabi hindu and they are known for eating meat and boozing! hehe Anyways, all the women in Sid's family minus myself and two aunts are veggies!!! It amazes me. They said it is a religious thing to them. I always said, "fine with me, more butter chicken for me"!

Personally if I were to stop eating meat it would be because of the bird flu or mad cow disease. I don't want to get sick off the food I eat. As I am banning tomatoes for the time being! btw...did you hear about the retards that stole 50,000 pounds of chicken in Delaware????

I decided to eat only free range meat (don't be fooled by the "natural" label...everything is "natural") two years ago after seeing film footage of the meat industry in action. I cut out salmon recently and try to be very careful about fish after learning about the long term effect of bottom trawling. We eat meat every other day at most. (I also switched to eating only organic, preferably local vegetables - we get a box delivered from a local farm - after understanding further how destructive monocultural farming and the genetic modifications that have been introduced.)

I tried being veg once and realized that my body type needs protein...I ended up eating beans and tofu all time and still felt tired out. Vegetarian food is awesome though. I cook and eat vegetarian all the time. I love vegetarian restaurants. Greens and Millennium are first choices for me always, when anyone asks : )

There are a variety of books that influenced my thinking on this topic: The Omnivore's Dilemma is full of good information, but his writing style is a little dry...Chew On This, by Eric Schlosser (Fast Food Nation) is a fast read and covers the topic fully.

It definitely seems to be more expensive, but honestly it evens out. I don't buy more than I need, use it fast (because I don't want to waste it!) and eating meat less regularly takes away a huge amount of money. Even in restaurants...I usually order a salad and split an entree with whoever I'm eating with - usually there's leftovers, still.

This is a minor effort on my part, and involved somewhat of a lifestyle change initially - I'm definitely very aware now of what goes into my mouth and how it effects the world around me. It works though...I'm healthier, don't gain weight and feel better for making that tiny amount of a difference.

I agree with everything nixe said, dead on with my diet. I buy at Trader Joe's. Your dollar goes along way and the food is great. If anyone knows something bad about that place don't tell me, I love it there, it's close and it's cheap.... Fast food Nation was an eye opener, and a great watch!!! Bella the "Queen of this Fuzz Scene" hope you have a great week. :) Jostel

Being a vegetarian should not be such a big deal to people-it is not a religion.. I dont tell anyone else what they should eat,im not puritanical about what is essentially a diet(although i do hold certain beliefs about the treatment of animals and the environmental damage caused by cattle farming etc.) Here in australia there are adverts on tv that claim there are dietary requirements that cannot be found anywhere other than meat- Which of course is a complete fabrication. Another recent advertisement states clearly "...if you dont like chicken, theres something very wrong with you...." Very very odd.. I have not always had a vegetarian diet but i have had for the last few years and in this time i've had no problems getting my required protein or anything else..i have not had any down turn in health or energy levels. My best advice would be-- be ready to spend more time preparing your meals-- but then thats the same if you want to have a healthy diet of any variety-- We all rely on processed and packaged foods far too much and our 'busy lives' apparently dont give us enough time to prepare healthy meals--- How backward is that? I could get a lot further into this but its already a bit of an essay.......

I dont eat too much meat, my freshman year I had to go to the hospital because...this is pretty lame btw... my sister made me laugh and I inhaled a chunk of steak and it stretched my esophagus. I had to drink Ensure for about a week, bleck. So meat kinda just freaks me out now. haha.

btw very nice use of WhiteNinja!
