"We didn't sell a lot of records, but everyone who bought one started a band." --Lou Reed on The Velvet Underground I used to be in a band called Babes in Toyland--almost exactly ten years after I left the band I started working for Fuzz. I was introduced to one of the founders through my brother who worked with him at Google. I have been doing a lot of thinking about what artists need--I always have, and now it's part of my job. I think that artists need to make a...
"The greatest and most important problems of life are fundamentally insoluble. They can never be solved, but only outgrown." -- Carl Jung "We didn't sell a lot of records, but everyone who bought one started a band." --Lou Reed on The Velvet Underground I used to be in a band called Babes in Toyland--almost exactly ten years after I left the band I started working for Fuzz. So my friend called me this afternoon and was a bit concerned that she hadn't heard from her boyfriend in a few days, especially since his ex-girlfriend shot herself in the head earlier in the week. I told her to stop worrying, he was probably just taking it all in. So then tonight she calls me, truly hysterical--he had just broken up with her, telling her that he was really in love with the dead woman. She was really upset, especially since she'd just held his hand through a Mayo...
I grew up in a town called Libertyville. Marlon Brando went to Libertyville High School. There was some graffiti up on the wall in the old Brainerd Building. You know what he went by? Bud. Bud Brando. My friend's Dad was friends with him from way back and he would come over and they would play Risk and he was Bud. Not Marlon. There will be more, and it may shock you. We haven't even gotten to the murders yet.
No one told me that you're supposed to take the nicotine patch off at night. Perhaps I should have read the directions. I can not sleep with all the nicotine coursing through my brain. It feels like I am a microwave with nothing in it that has been cooking itself for twenty minutes. Or perhaps even more so, like a squirrel in a blender, which is actually a line that was once used to describe my band in what was intended to be an unflattering review, but is still one of our...
It's 3:22am in Austin, TX and about an hour ago I was onstage singing "This Land is Your Land" with my high school buddy Tom Morello and the wonderful Queen V. Check her out at www.queenv.com--she is the real deal--and tell her to get on Fuzz! That was totally sweet of her to ask me up. I can't believe anyone in the audience even remembered me--it was definitely a moment for a 40-year old Mom. This has been a great week for Fuzz and a great week for all of us Fuzz...
Know how I started playing bass? My brother was a bass player all thru high school and had band practice in our garage after school. I never really had much interest, except he taught me Smoke on the Water when I was 11. When I was in my mid-20's we were both living in Mpls. and he was working at a restaurant and made pasta in the mornings. He was in the basement making pasta and got his hand caught in the pasta machine and the only other person in the restaurant was upstairs and they...
