THE RAMEN DAYS is a fantastic documentary by filmmaker Melissa Elbirt that tells the story of the recent Bay Area hardcore punk scene:
Its trials, tribulations, achievements and its failures all told by the bands and people who have worked so hard to make the Bay Area a viable, self-reliant and vibrant punk scene. The movie follows the lead of one John The Baker, a misfit punk who moved to the Bay Area to open a punk-run recording studio and gig space called Burnt Ramen in the lower slums of Richmond,CA. A place that turned into a combustible clubhouse of punk rock insanity and a breeding ground for relentless punk music, lifelong friendships and an example of what DIY/punk rock can achieve when left to its own devices ,until its closure by the Fire Marshall in 2003 (thanks Great White!). This film contains interviews (and live footage) by those who made it all happen and the bands that erupted out of this enviroment: BORN/DEAD, VOETSEK, DEADFALL, SCURVY DOGS, CASE OF EMERGENCY, STFU, DESOLATION, BLOWN TO BITS, STRUNG UP, EXIT WOUND and BRAINOIL. We feel this is one of the most important punk rock films in 20 years, surpassing past punk films like "Decline Of The Western Civilization" and "Another State Of Mind" in both heart and artistic vision. I get to play a show with my family when I return to NY on tour this year with my band INSTANT ASSHOLE.

My 2 nephews will share the stage with me at The Basement in Kingston NY. Joey Eppard is the leader of the band THREE on METALBLADE and is currently on The Progressive Nation Tour with Opeth and Dream Theater. Joey also plays in a band called DRUGS which is all members of P FUNK sans George Clinton. Joey is also a writer for P FUNK for the last 8 years . In addition Joey is an accomplished solo artist and he and I will be releasing a split 7" together sometime in the future.

Josh Eppard, Joeys younger brother, is the original drummer in Coheed and Cambria . After leaving THREE when he was 18 he joined a band called Shabutie which, after recording a demo, changed their name to Coheed and Cambria and well, the rest in history. After playing and touring with Coheed for 7 years non stop,Josh quit Co. & Ca. to persue his own hip hop project WEERD SCIENCE. The Science is recording their 2nd record right now and its going to be awesome !

Joey and Josh have started doing a duo together playing some of the old THREE tunes from when they were younger as well as new stuff. They have played twice now and so this will be their THIRD showcase of the Eppard Bros. Duo June 8th in our hometown of Kingston NY at The Basement 744 Broadway 9pm 21+ $5 with my band Instant Asshole. Joining us that evening is DENT freaturing Joe and Chris from THREE . Dent is the two drummers from THREE doing their duo which is an utterly amazing rhythmic assault and opening the night is DEAD UNICORN another duo of local area kids that is a cataclismic grindcore apparition.
Earlier at the basement INSTANT ASSHOLE will play an all ages show with local area punks starting at 5pm at The Basement.

Great Show Last Night ...and foxboro hot tubs !

While others were out in the heat, standing in line for Foxy Hot tubs at The Stork Club some, who were looking for greener pastures, found Instant Asshole playing with Fleas and Lice, Mouth Sewn Shut, InHaste and Self Inflicted in an oakland ware house. I heard that the green day show was EPIC at the Stork but we had 200 kids stuffed in our spot and kicked it super hard. Cant wait to hit the east coast in 10 days ! and play 6 shows off the bat with Mouth Sewn Shut, they crushed super hard and after they finished I looked at my band and said, "we are going to have to step it up if we are going to play night after night with those monsters !" We laughed , we are excited to hit the road! Check out our tour dates all finially complete ! A huge weight is lifted off my DIY shoulders. whew ..

likely to be a welcome home party at the Woodstock Mothership for us on MAY 28. An open mic with all the fun acoustic acts from woodstock, paul mcman and friends and many legends. I am so excited , thanks Rachel for organizing a party for me. Its been 8 years since I got home to NY after I fled town so the cops wouldnt kill me. Wish me Life so the cops dont catch up to me while I'm there!

Art versus Business- what do you prefer?

Artists create out of their experience and attempt to create important pieces for society and themselves to learn from and dont care who likes it because it is what they believe, feel, and have created..

Business people make comodities for profit and want to reach as many people as possible to sell as many units as possible..

Frank Moore once said; " Your art is like your baby daughter, why would you sell her into prostitution to make your life a little easier? You should do everything you can to support your art not try to get your art to support you." Keep your day job and make beautiful music and never change for others or comprimise your voice.

I like peoples raw unadulterated voice. The screams of human suffering. Hardcore from the reservation. its a window to the soul. I think everyones voice is equally valuable and therefor i like "good" and "Bad" art equally.

what do you think about art and business.? theres a movement for people to learn business skills for their art to be able to fund their lifes needs and wants. Lots of people want to be successful in the art or music business.

How do you define success?

My drummer george and I changed our definitions of sucess 10 years ago and it made us happier. We asked ourselves the question, In the phrase, I want to MAKE IT in the music world, what does "it" stand for?

For some people its money and fame that defines success and so just replace the word "IT" with the word "MONEY". Then the sentence reads, I want to Make MONEY in the music world. For us its was great art or music . So we replaced the word "it" with MUSIC and the sentence now reads, We want to make great MUSIC in the world of music.

If we eat out of dumpsters and make great music we are successful. Our definition is based on art not business or monetary gain. We define our success based on weather we feel we have created good music. If we are Making Music, we are successful and we do everything possible to support our music and our ablities to continue to create music we love.

How do you define success for yourself in the music or art worlds??

What is SPAM to you??

To me spam is when someone utilizes a mechanical devise or program to send out a message to multiple people at once .

It is NOT when a single person posts a flyer or even advertisement on a comment or sends direct to someones inbox. To me that is one person reaching out to another person and trying to establish a friendship. Sometimes that person doesnt agree or like the message that was sent and they can delete it or they can even set up preferences to dis allow comments from people who are not friends.

To me the internet is like the real world. Everyone is in their houses and people walk the streets putting up flyers out side your house. Someone recently told me they think that putting a flyer up is invading their house that they think their profile is more like the inside of their house.

I disagree and think that I would have to hack your site to be inside your house. If I hacked your site and stole yer password and started sending messages from your account, that sucks. But a single person posting messages / even advertisements on your comments page is more a kin to the street outside your house, because you can lock your door and keep me out simple by adjusting your preferences or deleting unwanted comments .

I am interested in what other people think, perhaps I am totally wrong and off base. Let me know what you think about spam!!!

John “the Baker” Eppard, the guy arrested for the lyrical content of his songs in Woodstock NY (1994) and proved the case against him unconstitutional (1995) and won an out of court settlement against the Town of Woodstock for $20,000 (1997) returns to NY after 10 years with his new band, Instant Asshole.

Following his freedom of speech victory, John the Baker left NY. Yet before leaving, he inspired a secret investigation against the Woodstock Police force with his song, “Cops Are FKin Little Girls”. Well, the cops were, and the State Police investigation proved it and as a result 6 Woodstock Police officers were fired for sexual misconduct.

John the Baker is the brother of noted Woodstock area musician Jimmy Eppard and Uncle to internationally renowned recording artists Joey Eppard (Three) and Josh Eppard (Weerd Science, former Coheed and Cambria).

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- MySpace, which has lured millions of big acts and garage bands alike to build profiles on the popular social networking hub to attract fans, said Thursday it will turn those pages into portals for selling music, merchandise and more.

Helping back the new MySpace Music are three of the biggest recording companies - Vivendi SA's Universal Music Group, Sony BMG Music Entertainment and Warner Music Group Corp.

Financial terms of the partnership were not disclosed, but each of the music companies will receive an unspecified equity stake in the new company, said Chris DeWolfe, MySpace co-founder and chief executive.

The fourth-largest music company, EMI Group PLC, is not part of the deal.

DeWolfe said MySpace is in licensing talks with "everyone" but declined to say where discussions stand with EMI, home to artists such as Coldplay and Norah Jones.

MySpace Music, which will roll out gradually in coming months, will enable artists to sell music downloads, concert tickets and merchandise such as T-shirts through their profile pages and to offer ringtones through a unit of MySpace parent News Corp.

"We believe that the Web is becoming increasingly more social," DeWolfe said during a conference call. "MySpace Music is a new way of experiencing music online that everyone can participate in."

Fans also will be able stream audio and video for free through musical artists' profile pages.

DeWolfe said some tracks will be sold without copy-protection safeguards but noted that the major labels had committed only to experimenting with offering content in an unrestricted format.

Selling music without the copy protections that make such tracks incompatible with Apple Inc.'s iPod music players could place MySpace Music in direct competition with existing digital music stores such as Apple's iTunes, Amazon.com, Napster Inc. and others, analysts said.

"It's definitely got a lot of potential to it, but how much it really changes the game is yet to be determined," said Michael Gartenberg, vice president and research director for JupiterResearch. "This is one of those important events in the history of digital music and it has a lot of potential going forward."

MySpace may also be looking for ways to maintain its lead on rival social network Facebook, which has been gaining in popularity.

James McQuivey, digital music analyst for Forrester Research, noted that the venture is wisely aiming to serve as a one-stop portal for music fans.

"A MySpace music store is exactly the right step to get the music industry to the next level because it recognizes that consumers don't just buy music, they experience it ... That's what people do with music already on MySpace, it's what has made Last.FM and iMeem.com so popular so quickly," he said.

The company declined to discuss pricing or other revenue details.

In 2006, MySpace began letting artists sell music from their profile pages using a third-party technology, but that capability never was integrated into the site the way MySpace Music's storefront will be, DeWolfe said.

MySpace, which boasts more than 110 million monthly users, has more than 5 million profile pages showcasing major label artists, independents and unsigned acts. All those artists would eventually be able to take advantage of MySpace Music's offerings, the company said.

MySpace Music will operate as a separate company, with a president who reports to DeWolfe and to a board of directors that will include representatives from the recording companies.

MySpace had been discussing the venture with music companies for several months, during which MySpace and Universal Music overcame a major hurdle - a copyright infringement lawsuit Universal brought against MySpace in 2006 over alleged illegal music sharing.

The two companies settled the dispute when MySpace agreed to pay Universal $100 million, according to a person familiar with the settlement who spoke on condition of anonymity because the terms are confidential.

Sony BMG is a joint venture of Sony Corp. and Bertelsmann AG.

Shares of Warner Music rose 2 cents to close at $5.81. News Corp. shares rose 17 cents to $20.17.

More Arrests at DQ U !!

Two students arrested at 4am this morning at DQ U ceremonial grounds. Aaron and Robert awoken at gunpoint as they slept next to the sweat lodge.

On March 31- 17 students and Elders were arrested at DQ U. Amidst a heated battle to end the years of corruption, the corrupt (and now illegitamate) board of administrators at DQ U lashed out at the students and brought sheriffs to the school and had students and elders arrested .

Today, April 2nd, 2 more students were arrested ! At 4am this morning at gunpoint while they slept near the sacred sweat lodge at the university's ceremonial grounds, 2 more students were arrested.

Since 2004 -05 when students returned for classes and the administration said it was closed and there would be no refund of tuition or forwarding of transcripts, students have stayed at the school and worked to change things for the better.

Much like the corruption of major charities like the United Way, and Christian Childrens Fund, the DQ University's administration has been operating with a level of corruption. Some say for years, former president Victor Gabriel said to channel 10 News that the whole administration has been corrupt for years. At some point in the 1980's the administration destroyed the 7 sacred sweat lodges on the campus and the medicine person left in 1986 and did not return until the student rebellion in 2004. Sweat lodges have been happening consistantly every wednesday and sunday from then until present. We are concerned that the administration will destroy the two new sweat lodges that remain and where the two students were arrested this morning at 4am.

A vigil is happening outside the campus. Please come and show support for the students who are trying to end the cycle of corruption and bringing in a new era of educatuional awareness!!

Vigil Planned in Front of the Yolo County Detention Center Later This Evening

Davis, CA- Student Leaders at Deganawidah-Quetzalcoatl are preparing a demonstration at 5:30 pm tonight in front of the Yolo County Detention Facility after a series of arrests that took place today on D-Q University campus early this morning around 9:30 am. Seventeen Youth and Elders were arrested, most without being given the option of leaving.

The Board of Trustees, accompanied by the Yolo County Sheriff’s Department have attempted to remove all the students from campus and brought in a locksmith to replace all the locks. One supporter remains on campus – having climbed up a tree, with the Sheriffs waiting to remove her. Another community supporter was threatened by the police to have the CPS called on her when she begged the Sheriffs to get permission to remove her baby’s diapers and needs from the campus.

The Associated Student Body of D-Q University is sending out an urgent appeal to the community to come and show their support against this great injustice. They encourage community members and media to arrive and participate in the student’s demonstration action and vigil.

On its own, the Student Body of D-Q U is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that currently holds the only classes at D-Q University, California’s ONLY Tribal College.

The Board of Trustees has not functioned to serve its purpose towards attaining re-accreditation, holding classes on campus, hiring a new administration, and/or bringing in funding for the school in the 3 years since their inception. The board has also been canceling meetings, having not met for the last 2 months, which highlights their inability to manage, run or organize a functioning institution.

In response to this neglect, the community has united with the students to implement a new board. The current Student Leaders hold numerous programs and workshops such as the Indigenous Perma-culture Program, bio-diesel workshops and bi-weekly ceremony on campus, despite constant harassment from former board members. Students are actively searching for teachers who can further develop a new curriculum and new board members to apply for membership.

The Native and Chicano communities around Yolo and Sacramento Counties agree that the Board of Trustees are incompetent and has repeatedly failed to re-implement the educational mission of the school- a mission that seeks to unify all Indigenous people and create a harmonious relationship with the community. This embodies continued commitment towards both traditional and formal higher education for all Indigenous people.

Please contact the CA Attorney General Jerry Brown and send letters in support of the Associated Student Body of D-Q U. Also, we are asking everyone to contact the Yolo County Sheriff Department to tell them to stop harassing the students and contact the District Attorney of Yolo County to drop the charges on the previous students that were arrested Feb. 20, 2008.

The court date for the D-Q U 3 that were arrested last month will be Wednesday, April 2, 2008 at 8:30 am at the Yolo County Courthouse. The community is encouraged to attend and support the students in their court case. Thank you!
