To me spam is when someone utilizes a mechanical devise or program to send out a message to multiple people at once .

It is NOT when a single person posts a flyer or even advertisement on a comment or sends direct to someones inbox. To me that is one person reaching out to another person and trying to establish a friendship. Sometimes that person doesnt agree or like the message that was sent and they can delete it or they can even set up preferences to dis allow comments from people who are not friends.

To me the internet is like the real world. Everyone is in their houses and people walk the streets putting up flyers out side your house. Someone recently told me they think that putting a flyer up is invading their house that they think their profile is more like the inside of their house.

I disagree and think that I would have to hack your site to be inside your house. If I hacked your site and stole yer password and started sending messages from your account, that sucks. But a single person posting messages / even advertisements on your comments page is more a kin to the street outside your house, because you can lock your door and keep me out simple by adjusting your preferences or deleting unwanted comments .

I am interested in what other people think, perhaps I am totally wrong and off base. Let me know what you think about spam!!!

peace,

The primary defining factor of spam is that it is unsolicited advertising. So, if you post "my band is da shiznit on dis sight - check me out" on someone's profile comments, then that qualifies as spam. It's not HOW you're sending it, it's WHAT you're sending.

I agree with the profile / front door analogy. People put a lot of work into personalizing their presence on the web, because they have something of value to share and want you to know it. When someone comes along and spams your page with posters or check me out comments, it's like they're saying: "This person isn't worth your time, come look at me instead."

Images are the worst, in my opinion, because they do upset the page owner's aesthetics and they do draw the readers' attention away from the primary focus of the page.

The great folks at Fuzz have given us recommend buttons for a reason. It takes 2 clicks to recommend your band to a new listener, it doesn't clutter up their profile page, and it's polite and discrete. Sure, some folks may even complain about getting those emails, but it is the polite and recommended way to introduce yourself if you can't come up with anything better to say than "hey, look at me."

BTW, you spelled your name wrong, ashole ;)

Hi Clif,
first, i am sure you enjoyed calling me ashole even though it was well crafted into a great sentence! awesome and thanks for the tip on spellin my name incorrectly .

i been online a long time have seen many things come and go, i still think that people can set their preferences to control activity on their site and so they dont have to try to control everyone elses actions. just set your preferences to approve comments first or dis allow from non friends er whatever. I like getting random notes, ads, messages from all walks of life. I like to know whats going on out there. I look and see and try to understand new technologies and forms of communication. I look at peoples communication techniques and look for ways to understand that person. But I guess I am weird and I even study commercials on TV for new creative ad strategies. I find it fascinating .

I think your definition is a good one and I actually can live with that and now will set out to find new ways to do what I do via messages and posts and comments. I am not afraid of a challenge nor am I out here just trying to piss people off, i am not. I am into improving my communication skills and computer skills as well. Especially when it comes to written communication because I do it so much. I like to be able to get my message across so it is heard in the way i intend it to be. And i am always learning. its a new world of communication.

So, thanks Clif for your definition . I appreciate you taking the time and reaching out to me in a friendly manner. I am old but always still learning. I have been online booking tours since 1996 before any corporations and really basically mostly punks here raising a rukkus. So i will accept your definition and back down and humbly say I have learned something.
peace,

PS reason I dont recommend my band every time instead of comment is because I cant tell if I have recommended before but I can tell if I have commented before. So perhaps we can get fuzz to update and make it so we can tell when or if we have asked this person with a recommendation already in the past.

A PUNK ROCKER is humbly backing down, Sid must be rolling over in is fucking grave, fuck me, punk is dead. What ever happened to fuck you, I will post where ever, and however the Fuck I want to, then we'd watch as you proceed to bang the fuck out of three Chords all night until all the strings are out of tune and blood is coming from the audiences noses. Then it would be capped off by you spitting on the computer(audience) in front of you. You will be the only one who knows you spit on your computer, but you will know, and it's all for effect. Next time you will post/spam/whatever and when the almost fabulous Germans complain yet again about spamming you can tell them "I humbly digress " as they tell you your music and promotional approach both suck(read that blog lately)..... This must be millennium PUNKkrock, where a Punk Rocker is called an ashole all the while he smiles and holds the door for the people while on his way out the door knocks him in his own ashole. SPAM to me is when someone advertises their shit without making it personal.
I understand everything has to be advertised, but at least write me a sentence or two about something before you copy/paste "yo yo yo come peep my shit RIGHT NOWWWWW".

At least strike up a convo or do it in a "I think you might like this b/c of blah blah blah".
Don't tell me to check out your Punk shit if you see in my genres that I don't like punk! (that was an example).
Target your audience, not just whomever you like.
