In 1987, while living in San Jose, California, I met Ted Smith of the Silicon Valley Toxics Coalition, an independent watchdog organization set up by Smith and his wife.
I learned that even though CFCs were banned in aerosol cans in 1978 that IBM in San Jose, Ca. and DUPONT Maryland were both using CFCs in high volume to clean computer chips. Smith along with a large coalition of people worked to stop this practice. By 1989 , the peak of their CFC use, we stopped them from continuing to use CFCs and got them to return to their prior cleaning procedure which was to use water to clean the computer chips. Also IBM had other problems, they had a 4 mile plume of contamination seeping under Bay Area towns from San Jose to Mountain View, Ca. and were contaminating wells along the way. Peoples hair was falling out, nerve disorders, failed pregnancies and miscarrages were happening and an alarming rate.
Through public outcry, scientific pressure and protest we were able to get IBM to suck up the contaminated ground water, purify it and then use that water to clean the computer chips.
CFCs are a big contributer to Global Warming and the greenhouse effect. The young Climatologists at San Jose State University at the time were predicting that the concentrations of CFCs were so dense coming from the IBM and Dupont plants that they were predicting that as the gases rise into the upper atmosphere where the Jet Stream usually would sweep away the gases and disperse them, they were predicting because the high concentrations that we would see openings in the ozone layer above the east and west coasts of the USA where at the time there were only openings at the North and South poles (where the jets stream spiraling normally takes them).
It takes 20 to 50 years for CFCs to reach the upper atmoosphere where they disrupt the operation of the ozone layer. So from 1978 -1989 IBM and DUPONT release an exorbonate amount of CFCs peaking in 1989 at around 1.5 billion pounds of CFCs released. And it is now 20 years later, THE END IS BEGUN.
Its 2007 now, i am not sure what scientists say about the ozone layer above the east and west coasts but it does seem as if skin cancer rates have increased. I have lost track of my scientist friends over the years so I am wondering if there is any documentation on the state of the ozone layer above the east and west coast of USA.
