Yeah - here I go again - lately I have been slacking a bit with my Dream Pop obsession :-) And then - yesterday - something happened, I didn't expect to...Most of the times I delete friends requests of artists on Myspace without "checking them out" - these girls dropped me some lines - I gave their music a listen - and really like it!
The story doesn't end there: I invited over to Fuzz: And here they are!!!

This is not...The Crash Test Dummies

Why hijacking a band name that has already been used for decades by a famous band. I know that it happens quite often that more than one band go under the same name....but the real Crash Test Dummies do already exist for quite a long time and these guys here since 4 years???? Makes me wonder.

Wikipedia:

Crash Test Dummies are a Canadian folk-rock group from Winnipeg, Manitoba, popular in the early 1990s. [...]

Mainstream success

Crash Test Dummies first began to achieve commercial success in Canada with the release of The Ghosts that Haunt Me in 1991. The album eventually reached quadruple platinum sales (400,000) in Canada, largely due to the overwhelming popularity of the smash hit single "Superman's Song," which earned the Dummies the 1991 Juno Award for Group of the Year.

However, the Dummies did not receive much international recognition until the 1993 release of their second album, God Shuffled His Feet. Particularly instrumental in increasing CTD's exposure in the U.S. market was the appearance of a new type of radio format: adult album-oriented alternative rock (AAA). These stations put the single "Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm" in high rotation. The result was that by mid-1994, the album had passed the platinum sales mark in the U.S. (one million), and had also earned the Dummies three Grammy nominations and three more Juno nominations. To date, GSHF has sold more than five and a half million copies worldwide. [......]

The Dummies today

On August 6, 2006, a message was posted by Brad Roberts on the band's website stating that the band was more or less done with touring and that he was currently working on an album, with Stewart Lerman, using the optigan and omnichord. Brad also stated that the new recordings will be released for download online, for a modest fee, instead of being sold in retail stores.

On May 10, 2007, the song "It's a Small Town," written for a charity event in Englishtown, Cape Breton, was released for download off the band's website.

On September, 2007 an official podcast was launched for the band and it was announced that Sony BMG will be releasing a "best of" compilation for the band. In addition a new online store was opened allowing users to purchase downloads from all of the band's post-BMG releases, including the new Cape Breton Lobster Bash series. [.....]

Seriously - I was quite disappointed when I first saw the Crash Test Dummies appear - and then had to notice it's just a very unknown wannabe band that hasn't even songs up :-(((

Their style is indeed hard to describe...for me it sounds more like Trip-Hop...complex and haunting melodies...very well produced and ...Now GO and listen yourself.

This blog is about my love my passion and finally something that sounds quite boring: "online catalogs for music releases".

It starts with my love: SomeVapourTrails. Last year in fall we met on Last.Fm. He saw that Mazzy Star were on top of my charts and did recommend "Different Stars" by Trespassers William to me. That's why I chose DifferentStars as nickname (SomeVapourTrails refers to "Vapour Trail" another Trespassers William's song)

Now coming to my passion: I am a very passionate musiclover and I love to spread the word for my favorite artists.
That's why I signed up on *rym.
*rym :

Rate Your Music is a metadata database where musical albums, EPs, singles, videos, and bootlegs are rated and reviewed by users. This data is then used to generate music recommendations for users and to create rated lists of music albums. Weighted averages are used to calculate the ordering for these lists; regular members who write reviews and rate more albums have a greater weight applied to their ratings. It is a wiki in the sense that users can add, edit and remove content; however, the majority of new, edited content must be approved by a moderator.

Source: Wikipedia

In April Trespassers William's singer Anna-Lynne Williams released her first solo album as Lotte Kestner "China Mountain".
I did add this release to *rym and finally received this message of a *rym user:

i noticed the tresspassers william user name :)

i just ordered the lotte disc myself as soon as i realized it existed yesterday (as well as the b-sides to it and the b-sides from different stars)

Just received a second mail - the story becomes even better:

I actually ended up doing an interview with Anna-Lynne after ordering the disc...if you are interested, you can read it here:

http://www.musicgourmets.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=4267

That's how he found out about the Lotte Kestner release: By noticing that my nickname refers to a Trespassers William song and by checking out the releases I added on *rym. (http://rateyourmusic.com/~DifferentStars)

Unfortunately not all artists have fans that do add their releases to oneline catalogs...but it's important to be listed there - you never know how and why people find you.

Here are 2 of the most important online catalogues.
Musicbrainz (http://musicbrainz.org/) Sites like Last.Fm are importing the data of Musicbrainz - that's why it is very important that releases are listed there.
Discogs (http://www.discogs.com/)

The Sables are one of the bands I discovered on Fuzz and fell in love with immediately. As a passionate Dream Pop lover I am always looking for new Shoegaze/ Dream Pop bands to discover. The Sables are what I call the new Dream Pop generation. Every genre need to evolve - as much as I love Mazzy Star - I do dislike bands that just try to sound like Mazzy Star.
The Sables succeeded in creating their own unique sound and take their listeners through an enjoyable journey. Perfect Soundtrack for a daydreaming time spend on the sofa leaving all the stress and hectic behind.

The tracklisting is shorter than intended as I completely fucked up the layout for the original one. Unfortunately the "make mixtape" sections is still hard to navigate and buggy - especially the "search for song/artist" function. Loved to be able to convert playlists into mixtapes.

As I dislike the preset layouts - I tried to create my own one. It would be nice if new layouts of users could be added to the preset layouts . (I already saw nice ones I loved to use ) In addition it would be amazing to be able to edit existing mixtapes.

How are your mixtape experieces?

Glad to announce that emilyarta gave me a hint for the first part of the solution:
You can actually make mixtapes from existing playlists:

http://www.fuzz.com/mixtapes/create?playlistId=

When you go to your playlist there should be an ID # and you just plug it in after the =

....and why we shouldn't care!

Some people on Fuzz might have already noticed that I am a huge fan of Lula's "Lonely Lovers". Indeed on of my top overall favorite songs. Quickly joined by "Lalala" (not yet up - but I have found a live video)

(unfortunately most of the Fuzz viewers won't understand the German lyrics- I really like them)

"Perfect Day" is an amazing song, too. Very unique sound with uplifting beats and her [stealing word from promo text] stunning voice - in this case I do have to agree ;-)

The real beauty and power of Lula's voice finds complete expression in her live performances.

"Lonely Lovers" live at the Junction Bar Berlin:

"So Wunderbar" is a very nice song too - but compared to Lula's live performances its a bit meaning less and pale. TheCapitalClinic wrote as a response to my "So much Love for the Lonely Lovers" blog :

"There is still a deeper vein of feeling that I think this artist can dig for and find

and commented on the profile page:

Thanks for uploading this well-produced trio of melodic, catchy, and representative sampling of your work.
Your voice is distinctive - bright, breathless, uplifting, but only for the most part - the distinctive element lies in the all-important qualifier [which I think the reviewer in your bio was getting at when he/she suggests more nuance and depth than your here-today-gone-tomorrow popster - I hope you find this deeper vein].Makes me think of crystal petals, not wanting to fall down. I will circle back again later./

I do agree with him - (haven't heard all of the soon to be released "Lost In Reverie" songs yet) - "Lost In Reverie" is very well produced by Wayne Jackson and Olsen Involtini - but occasionally a bit too smooth for my taste and fells a bit like Lula is "driving with handbrake on".

Coming to the point, that starts to annoy me: Almost every promo text or bio of Lula I read focused on the fact that she is Bela B.'s muse and best friend - Wikipedia finally tells us that she is his manager too. Although the reason why I discovered Lula was "Bingo" the master's solo debut album and their duet "Hab keine Angst"- I do believe standing in Bela B.'s shadow doesn't suit her very well.

One of the weakest "Lost In Reverie" songs is definitely "I want" another duet with Bela B. - not because of her but his vocal performance on this song is - hm - I dare not to say it - kind of not so good [trying to say in a friendly way: lousy]
In general Bela B. is not so well known for his vocal skills - but I do adore his entertaining skills and like some of his solo songs. [and yes he is part of "die beste band der welt" (best band of the world) die Ärzte.]

Just hope one day everyone says "yeah I heard of Bela B. - he is Lula's muse"

Just stole this quote from Beradley:

Lets get back to the important thing - this bands music. I love "Waiting For The Tide" and "Sunbeam". A great laid back melodic flowing vibe going on throughout this bands' music. I usually don't compare, but if one likes bands like ; The Brian Jonestown Massacre, The Warlocks, Jesus and Mary Chain, Mazzy Star, Stevenson Ranch Davidians...etc... then this band would as well be appealing to your senses. I do need to mention however that they definitely have their own stamp on this style of music at the same time though, which makes their sound pretty distinctive. Good recording quality too! Amen !

"By your side (live)" is one of my top Fuzz overall songs. Hardly found a song that is as emotional without being kitschy. In many cases musicians try to hard to find the perfect sound during studio production. The most precious songs just happen - live and acoustic (the same with Wayne Jackson's live version of "The Storm") - more than "high class studio albums" I loved to buy unplugged albums of these talented artists.

Now you do asked yourself - why did she confuse "The Majority"? Read my blog about ID3 tags - then go to their Myspace - download the songs and correct the tags :-)
(just a tip: remove the dot at the end of the artist name and add some of the song name information)

Dear "The Majority" - even if you messed up your ID3 tags - this punishment seem a bit hard:

Just hope you didn't have to copy with anything like that for your new video :-)

PS: What did you do to the director of that video? Seduce his girlfriend???

A lot of sites like Last.Fm, iLike, Musicstrands provide plug-ins for media players/applications that allow to read the ID3 tags of the music the users are playing (it is called Scrobbling on Last.Fm)

Scrobbling a song means that when you listen to it, the name of the song is sent to Last.fm and added to your music profile.
............ you can scrobble songs you listen to on your computer or iPod automatically....... Songs you listen to will also appear on your Last.fm profile page for others to see.

(Source Last.Fm FAQ)

iLike says:

How do you build your artist database?
We build our artist database based on information provided from various sources. Here's a bunch of information if you want to learn how it works:
1) Users contribute data about an artist and their discography through the iLike Sidebar
When users play music on their computer, we use that data to grow a worldwide discography based on what real people are listening to....
We see lots of different misspellings for the same artist. We have some algorithms to correct this, we have improvements in the pipeline to make this better, and at some point we will ask our userbase to help us catch more miss-spellings. For now, if you look at a page with a miss-spelled artist or song, it won't have proper photos or clips, because we didn't match it up to the real artist/song.

If your ID3 tags are wrong it's creating a mess.

Especially free downloads on Myspace are often mistagged by artists. Some forget their last name - even if this is a part of their official artist name. Some add !, . - although these signs are not part of the official artist name.

One example: Marianne + Matt - well I do know it's Marianne Dissard & Matt Mitchell - when I downloaded their song on Myspace it was tagged as "Marianne + Matt" - now there are some name variations pages on Last.Fm for them.

If you visit the Marianne & Michael page, some other musicians appear I wouldn't want to get mixed up with if I was a really good French singer :-)

Most listeners don't pay attention and just scrobble their music the way it is tagged by artists/labels - this is creating a mess.

Every information about you as an artist is important and helps to find and discover you on the Internet. Pay attention that you use your correct artist and song names.
