Bio
The legend is true. Part David and Goliath. Part Cinderella. Part Rocky.
Once upon a time there was a teenage rocker named Joan Jett. She was making rock and roll history in a teenage group called The Runaways. When that band broke up, she met hit songwriter/producer Kenny Laguna. They saw in each other a kindred spirit and set about to work together. Kenny thought she was great, and expected no problem convincing record labels to put out the record they had just finished.
But he was wrong. No one wanted her. Today there are only 3 or 4 behemoth labels, but imagine a time in the past when there were 28 major labels, AND THEY ALL TURNED JOAN JETT DOWN! They turned down "Bad Reputation". They turned down " Do You Wanna Touch Me". They could not hear the potential of " I Love Rock n' Roll" or "Crimson and Clover".
So Joan and Kenny decided to start their own record company, manufacture their own records, and sell them...sometimes from the trunk of their car. Guerilla marketing was invented. Blackheart Records was born.
Now, as we recently celebrated our 25th anniversary, Blackheart Records' future is as exciting as its past. The Dollyrots, The Vacancies and Girl In A Coma join Joan Jett and The Blackhearts with their recent releases. They build on the history of the label that has included musical releases by the great Metal Church, the legendary Big Daddy Kane, the unique Mutabaruka, the quirky Beserkley's Best and others of almost every genre.
Joan Jett became the first woman in rock and roll to own her own record company. The impulse to do that, our reason for being, has not changed in all these years. We love music. We think great music needs a nurturing home. And we think you'll love the music coming out of Blackheart Records this year.
