Such awesome virtuoso musicianship, and a real inspiration to me. I got to see them live back in the day, a concert I will always remember. Their "Birds Of Fire" LP stayed on my turntable for a long time, as well as other LPs of theirs. Rick Laird is one of my favorite bassists, I understand that he runs a successful photography business now, and no longer performs as he once did.

As a group, they put together a body of work that will stand the test of time. My thanks to you Beradley for posting a video that reminds us musicians that playing music is technical indeed, but in addition, must also retain a strong spiritual component from ourselves.

Absolutely BB... I love "Birds Of Fire". I really dig "The Inner Mounting Flame" and "Visions Of The Emerald Beyond" as well. From the 1st time I heard them, my perception of music and sound in general was changed forever. They are very inspirational for me as well. Man, you saw them live !! I'm jealous. I'm glad you had that opportunity..

I didn't know Rick Laird is a photographer, I remember Jan Hammer did the the old theme song for Miami Vice - the tv show (not the movie), ahh haa, quite a change from Mahavishnu days I guess... Is Jerry Goodman just over the top amazing on this video clip or what!? Man, (sigh) I love these guys!

Wow! What can I say?

That I love these guys.
That this shows in less than 10 minutes of intense experience what I try to blog about without the commanding power in 10 days.
That it is what music can do to transform.

I got to see these guys on their first tour...myself and some other musicians saw them and it was can any word express it??? unbelievable comes close but .... I had gotten a demo record of them months prior to their first release and we just sat around listening to it and trying to figure out how in the hell they played all of that music .... then we went to see them and we could tell that the audience was mostly musicians because noone else could even come close to considering what they were doing as music and after they finished their first song the crowd was just absolutely silent !!!!! we were all just so blown away by seeing them do what we had been listening to that we were awe struck !!!! I have never before or never will experience anything like that again....we rode back the 70 miles to my place in total silence...what could we say??? what could you say ??? There were no words to quantify what they were doing...Thanks so much for putting this video on your site...now I am 60 and I look back on those days as absolutely magical as far as music and spirituality are conserned.
If any of you know of a dvd of the same group playing in this band please post it...I tell people about it but until you actually see them you can't believe it!
